how to select blog hosting

Posted by Dan Keller in Uncategorized on 10 27th, 2009 | 25 responses

A couple of days ago I wrote a post about how serious bloggers should buy their own domain and I provided some tips on how to choose your web hosting . If you are going to spend a considerable amount of time and energy building your blog, wouldn’t you want to own it?  I know I want control of my blog, not Google.   After reading the comments it seems like most people agree with me on that point.

There are hundreds of website hosting companies to choose from and it is important to do your research before choosing one.  Of course one consideration will be price and I have seen hosting as cheap as $1.99 a month all the way up to $19.99 a month.  In my opinion you should never select a hosting company on price alone. There are many other factors to consider, such as up time and customer service.  A word of advice, NEVER do business with a hosting company that does not list a phone number on their website.  I got burnt by this early on and it is a lesson I will never forget.  It is important to read reviews and ask other bloggers and webmasters what they would recommend.  Through the comments on my blog and based on my own knowledge and experience some top choices for bloggers are Blue Host and Host Gator.  They seem to be reasonably priced and have good up time and good customer service.

My recommendation is FATCOW.  They are great in customer service and they have the best deal going right now.  Here is a link if you want to start your research..

    I use Host Gator and I have to say, they are the best. I have been with them for about 2 years with no downtime and I have had 3 small support issues and they responded very quickly and efficiently.

    But wordpress is recommending blue host. I am using godaddy for their exceptional customer support and nil downtime (so far so good). The first thing hits my brain when I think of hosting is the lucrative discounts and offers. I think I got a good one from godaddy and that is why I chose it over others then.

    Although I use blogger for my main blog (at least for now), I have other blogs self-hosted on Blue Host. I am very satisfied with them up to now and can’t really say anything about the customer service as luckily I have not needed that from them yet:)

    May be I am not really competent in this question. But I actually prefer, free hosting. I have a private blog and do not really aim to make money with it. So for me a free hosting is the best solution.

    Most blogs don’t need particularly advanced hosting so it is usually possible to find adequate enough hosting that does not cost too much.

    Good post but I would personally advise people to go for Arvixe or HostGator. Arvixe is the best suited IMO as it is cheap too with a quality support and servers.

    I have no intentions of trying to make money from hosting, but I chose hostgator’s reseller package to host my websites. I decided that it was the best option for me to host about 16 websites under 1 account. I might host a friend’s website for cheap down the road, but I don’t know enough about the technical side of hosting to offer it to others.

    @jinnie@fatcow hosting coupons,

    I own a reseller account from them also, for mostly the same reasons.

    However I’m not clear on exactly who takes care of technical issues with buyers of our reselling, I think they still do. :)
