Weekly Blogging Debate : One main Twitter account or multiples for all sites?

I am reintroducing a feature that I used to highlight on this blog.  The concept is simple, each week I will introduce a topic that is sure to bring about a lively discussion.

I also came up with a list of the top 10 things bloggers debate about , but this list is a bit dated but most of the examples on the list still apply.

Today I want to discuss the topic of Twitter accounts.

Here is my situation, I have about 10 different Twitter accounts.  Every time I start a new blog or develop a new site, I will create a new Twitter account.  For example, my main Twitter handle is @thedankeller but I also have @tycoonblogger for this blog and @careerblogger for my career blog and @iwriteresumes for my resume writing business.

Should I focus on building up my main Twitter or split things up and have a focused Twitter account for each project/blog?

I really need help with this one as my opinion changes on a daily basis.  Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

Thank you all for the lively conversation in the comments.  It seems that the majority of people recommend sticking with one twitter account.  Out of 13 definitive opinions, 10 recommend one account.

I have decided to stick with one account and it will be the one that is my personal account @thedankeller.  I think this will work because most of what I am involved in online is technology or blogging related.  I also run a career advice blog but many of the post I write are about how to use social media to find a job so that fits right in.

    I directly fall into this category and I agree with DiTesco above. It depends on what you’re doing. I would love to have only 1 twitter account but when you’re dealing with different niches/topics, it may make sense to have multiple Twitter accounts.

    Having only 1 account, I worry about “losing” some people if they signed up for Topic A but keep hearing about Topic B, C, D, E, etc – they may end up unsubscribing. Also, there’s tools out there now to handle Twitter accounts – such as Hootsuite.

    But, I do agree having 1 Twitter account would be nice from a comprehensive follower list perspective.

    Hello! My opinion is to have separate accounts, because of SEO reasons and readers interest. Thanks for stating the debate.

    I think its better to have seperate twitter accounts although too many can be difficult to manage at once. You just need to limit yourself to how many you have.

    It´s important to remember your followers don´t have necessarily the same interests, hence separate accounts are the best option ;)

    I think you should only focus on one twitter account, It will increase followers sooner and your followers don’t need to follow any account and they can retweet only 1 account for your many post.

    I think it’s better if we have just one account at twitter, because it’ll confusing ourselves with many accounts, and we’ll focus on that. Thank you for sharing…

    Very Interesting Post and above all the debate is worth discussion and people often ignore this… in my opinion this is very much depends from scenario to scenario…

    If you (person) is a known identity then you might not need multiple accounts for multiple websites but in any other case like you want people not to mix these two websites in the social then having a different twitter account is a better idea… In-case you are using or handling multiple twitter accounts, try out Hootesuite as by that you can update social network without even logging in to that.

      Thanks Aaron , I’m trying to be a “known identity” so I maybe I will just stick with the one account ;-) Good idea on Hootsuite, I use it use it, not sure why I stopped..

    I been working in two account and really so hard to manage it. but some time if we post all thing in one account it feel so massy (like i m having technology and enews paper site so both are different niche) so for this we have to create personal+ professional account

    For me, I suggest on concentrating on one Twitter account. I have my reasons for this. First, it is easier to monitor; Second, I’ll use some sort of analogy on this, it is like a piece of glass, it is won’t be as useful if they are all broken into pieces unlike if it is whole. And last but not least, since my comment is already long ha,ha,ha, you can always use that single account to market your other efforts as well, that way you’ll have a wider audience. You may never know, your audience for this particular endeavor might also end up liking your other endeavor. Just saying :)

      I agree with Donna on this one. Management is an issue. If there is a compelling reason get another account though.

    Ahh, the all time question of having Twitter multiple accounts. IMO, I really think it all bols down to the “type” of topics you are blogging about. For example although I have about five different niche sites, they are all related so in this case I use the same Twitter account. On other sites, I tend to create a different account that could blend more with the type of audience it is targeting. Just like blogging, it really does not make sense to “mix” different unrelated topics together, hence the reason some of us have more than one site :)

    Ultimately, it depends on what you are doing on Twitter. If you are in a way using it for business, or just for the “social aspect” of it.. just my 2Cents :)

      Thanks Ditesco, that makes sense. Two of my topic are related – blogging and tech. The other is career job related, so maybe i will carve that out seperately.

    I do agree with your statement Alison. I been working in two account and really so hard to manage it. You must focus in one account so that you may establish it and be more productive on it.

    Personally I think, that each person should have one twitter account… because it will be very difficult to find friend if he\she has a lot of accounts…

    I think that 1 twitter acount should be enough as it has the FOLLOWING benifits; more people will follow and interact with you/each other, it will allow you to add variety to your tweets and it will aslo save time.

    I think if you establish the @ tycoonblogger and it was stable then you can focus on the other account but I’ll be more comfortable on working in just one account. Anyways, it’s just the same person working on different accounts. everything has it’s own time, in the meantime, in my own perception, it would be better to have one account to focus on.

        It is way too difficult to manage multiples with everything else that I have going on. It was interesting to read the different reasons that others feel that way though.
        Dan, I enjoy your writing style, it fits right in with what I am learning right now so I am reading many of your posts. Hopefully it doesn’t seem like I am “stalking” you. :)
