Twittley is out. Should I go Topsy or Tweetmeme?

Some of you may have noticed that I changed retweet buttons yesterday.  It was time for me and Twittley to part ways.  For a site that had so much potential, Twittley seems to have fizzled and I did not feel like going down with the ship.  Here are some of the factors that have lead to my decision to drop the Twittley retweet plugin.

  • Over the past months, there have been at least a dozens times when the button was “off line”.
  • Increase in Spam, including porn.  I certainly do not want my blog associated with that.
  • It is a ghost town.  Several months ago there was a lot of action going on and my blogging buddies like Dragon Blogger and Extreme John added a spark there.  It seems like most of the bloggers have already dropped Twittley.
  • Effort. Not that it takes a ton of time, but you still have to log on to the site to get to your first tweet out.
  • Here is the final straw.  Yesterday, when I went to add my link, it would not allow me because it said that the content was questionable and was against their terms of service.  After that, I went searching for something else.

I was going to jump on the Tweetmeme bandwagon but I decided to take a closer look at the Topsy Retweet Plugin.

Here are some reasons why I went with Topsy for now:

  • I really like how Topsy does not delete old posts, so it will keep count on the retweets for all of my posts.
  • Free analytics from Topsy trackbacks
  • Aside from all else, I really like pulling for the underdog.   This may seems strange but I really could not find any major advantages that Tweetmeme has over Topsy.

Let me know if I am missing anything her about Tweetmeme.  I could always be swayed and will change if Tweetmeme if it is really superior.

Help me decide which retweet button to use.

What retweet button are you all using? and Why?

    Dan,

I have used TweetMeme and Twittley. I ending up with TweetMeme, but I think I will be converting to topsy if I can get it to look good on my blog.

This is off subject, but I felt sort of the same way when I made the choice to ditch MySpace for Facebook, and I notice that Facebook is a much more effective professional platform. Just a thought.

I’m surprised to see you leave Twittley. After all, your posts were often to be found on the frontpage of Twittley and I also RT’ed a bunch of them every now and then.

But I must admit, I’ve been interesting in finding something else myself. I’m getting very few retweets for the past month or so, on Twittley, compared to when I first started using Twittley.

I’ll check out Topsy as well, never heard of them till now.

    • Dan Keller says:

@Klaus @ TechPatio, Suprisingly, there was not much traffic flowing from being on page 1. Now if Twittley made the links do follow, I would still be there.

      • Klaus says:

@Dan Keller, Yeah getting dofollow links from Twittley, that would be something :) Speaking of do follow, I received your automated response that mentions ‘do follow’ links on your blog, and noticed that my CommentLuv links are no follow, while some are do follow? What’s the requirements / policy on that matter?

I had a look at Topsy, it looks nice. But I couldn’t integrate it into where I have my Twittley button because their button keeps adding a DIV around it, making it break out from the TD I place it within, to fit next to stumble and digg.

I think tweetmeme uses a lot of time in tweeting by asking to sign in whereas topsy makes tweeting easier by redirecting to the twitter website.

I am using topsy and it is working fine for me :)

The only reason why I’m usin Tweetmeme is that it is a part of Digg Digg plugin.

PS. Why everytime I click on some clean space on your blog, it loads “itk.socialspark.com”? Is it some kind of a click tracking?

I am using Tweetmeme and quite frankly I have not yet tried Topsy. Acording to Hesham, Tweetmeme increases page load and this I have not yet assessed. If this is true (will test), then I will go for Topsy. you made it sound very interesting:)

  12. Aha!! You too? I thought I was the only one who got that idiotic “objectionable content” message. I told them to delete my account and whatever links they had to it – I found their cheeky little insults offensive and they were completely uncalled for. I told them I didn’t want my site associated with theirs, and I’m glad to read this and see that I wasn’t just being…I dunno, cranky and caffeine deprived. I like TweetMeme; it’s in widespread use and easy for everyone. I don’t need for it to have a whole lot of bells and whistles.

I use Backtype tweet counter on my site. I like it because it is smaller and less intrusive, plus it doesn’t require a third party sign in to work, just takes them to their twitter account.

Can’t say that I have tried Topsy, but Tweetmeme is working great for me, so I have no problems recommending that you use it!

  15. Hesham says:

I am with Topsy right now on my blog, I have to be honest Dan, I really don’t know which one to choose for real Topsy or Tweetmeme, but some times I want to go with both because both counters shows different results!

So, basically what I am going to do is to keep Topsy on the tagline and home page, and use Tweetmeme under the post on the “share this” box!

By the way, Tweetmeme is increasing the page load! and this is why I am not going to use it on my blog home page, I think Topsy is more faster, maybe I am wrong but this is what I am thinking to do for now!
