secure your blog name on the major social networks

We all know that if you buy a domain name and pay for hosting, then you own your name.  When you register your profile with free blog sites like Blogspot,  Google owns it, but that is not really what I am talking about.  What I want to highlight is a growing trend of people registering the names of popular and up and coming blog brands on sites like Blogspot and Twitter.  Last week, I read a post and the blogger was complaining that somebody took his domain name and used it to create a Blogspot blog.  We all know how that could diminish the blog’s brand.  We have seen this happen on on other social networks, most notably Twitter.  Up until I read that post, I had not given this much thought.  I immediatelly went to Blogspot and registed tycoonblogger.blogspot.com.  I have not done anything with the site and probably never will but I am sure glad that it is my hands and not somebody elses.  After I did this, I did the same thing over at Facebook and Linkedin.  Just last month, Facebook started to allow users to secure their own personal Facebook domain name.  I am now the proud owner of http://linkedin.com/in/tycoonblogger and http://facebook.com/tycoonblogger . I will probably start to develop my profile and following on these sites very soon as I think there is value in both.  On a side note, if you are on Linkedin or Facebook, send me an invite!!

Long story short, if you do not yet have your blog name at blogspot, twitter, facebook or linkedin, go get it now before somebody else does.  On the flip side, if you have a Blogspot blog, you should think about registering your domain name.  It will be $8 well spent.

Have you secured your name across the major social networks yet?  Including Linkedin and Facebook?

Some of the people out there think that social networking is losing its charm. Global recession is what people point out as a reason that is degrading the popularity of the social networks. The real fact is that social networking is headed towards a different path.

I’d never thought of doing such a thing but after reading your post it makes perfect sense. My blog isn’t very successful but I suppose you never know and it could be too late to register these names once it is popular.

I learned the hard way about 10 years ago that if I am serious about a domain name or character name I scoop up just about every variation I can.

This is an excellent tip for Business owners as well as bloggers and social bookmarking.
