Making money on Twitter – two months and $50 later

Making money on Twitter – two months and $50 later

I know a lot of people have been wondering if it is really possible to make money on Twitter.  I was definitely curious as well and that is why I set out a couple of months and experimented with a couple of services and determine first hand what works for the average person.  I do not have a real good definition for the average Twitter person, so let me just tell you that I have 4,200 followers with the Twitter account that I used.

A couple of months ago I signed up for the three leading services that put advertiser and twitter users together and enable twitter users to make money sending out advertisements in their Twitter stream.

Sponsored Tweets

MyLikes

Ad.ly

Well the results are in and there is a clear and decisive winner, in fact it was not even close.  Sponsored Tweets is the only service that consistently delivered results and offered almost daily opportunities for me to make a couple of bucks.  Let me be clear, the average Twitter user will not become rich by using Sponsored Tweets but I think it can be a good additional revenue stream to add to you other sources of blog income.  What actually prompted me to write this post was the fact that I reached the all important $50 mark today.  This is the threshold that must be reached to trigger a payout.  What I really like about the payout system is that when I reached the threshold I was instantly able to cash the money out into my PayPal account.

I am sure you are curious to hear how much I made with Ad.ly and MyLikes.  That would be $0 with Ad.ly and almost $8 with MyLikes, most of that from referrals.

Considering it took me over 6 months to make my first $50 blogging, making that much in the first 2 months of Twittering does not seem that bad.

Viral Bliss recently wrote a short post about checking your Twitter klout which is worth checking out.

I have tried different methods of making cash on my blogs and directory’s. About the only thing that works for me is Adsense. Not sure why that is, but Google does pay a pretty good amount per click.

SponsoredTweets I like and have been using them for a bit of while. Only thing with my thought is that opportunities available to me are erratic. I go through a dry spell and then all of a sudden there is a flood of opportunities. I recently signed up to MyLikes and that has been ticking away okay slowly but surely. Ad.ly I havent tried and I dont think I will. The other things I am doing to try and make money on Twitter are via RevResponse and Twitterfeed which has produced mixed results. There are some things that are for some and not for others.

@Gerri, i have gone through the same up and downs with sponsored tweets. I am getting one per day throught the last week now. I will take it while it is coming.

  5. Dan Keller says:

@Ileane @ The Podcast Blog, It took a while for me to get going but I seem to get a least 1, sometimes 2 offers per day on Sponsored Tweets. I actually got my first offer from Ad.ly a couple of days ago. I couldn’t be bothered with them.

  6. Hello Dan. Oh I see. I just thought, that you needed 2 month to “collect” your followers on Twitter. So it is obviously not like that.

So, is it a secret how you got that many followers?

  7. Two months and 50$ If you worked that time regular, you could have earned 100x more than 50$. So why you invest your time in twitter?

    • Dan Keller says:

@Strompreisvergleich, I am not sure I follow your logic. I am not investing any real time in Twitter. It takes less than one minute to send out a sponsored tweet.

Dan, it might not have taken you 6 months to get to $50 if you had started with 100 regular visitors, I am assuming you started from scratch, right?

How does the follower count impacted your revenues? The more you have the better it pays? Also, does “Sponsored Tweets” look at the ratio following/followers

    • Dan Keller says:

@Tom@NetAccountant, Yes Tom, I startd that Twitter account from scratch and yes the more followers you have and the better ratio you have the more money you can demand. You can set your price to whatever you want, but the trick is to make if attractive enough for the advertisers to feel comfortable buying from you. I cahre $1.75.

  10. You have a very successful Twitter account, I make about $2.00 per month just in SponsoredTweets referral earnings. I only get about 1 offer per week or two anymore to advertise. MyLikes earned me about $8 in 3 weeks so far.

    An interesting concept.

I have only just started looking into twitter and its uses but I can see it does require some dedication to really get the most out of it.

Bookmarked the site though in case I do revisit twitter with a passion. :)

@TechOfWeb, It is hard to get going for sure. I am wondering if you have played with the pricing. Even though they recommend I charge $6 , I have set it at $1.75 and I have seen a lot of offers at that amount.

I would have to agree with you.

Although I have only made a few dollars with sponsored tweets my followers on Twitter are only just above the 1,000 mark so I could see that if I had more followers the more people would want me to send out for them.

    Nice going,

    James

  18. Tyler Davis says:

I signed up for twitter mostly for sponsored tweets. Twitter is a good way to be notified of all the updates in your niche(like an RSS feed but includes Yahoo Answers too). This depends on how hard the other people in your niche work too… How do you not make the sponsored tweets stick out like a sore thumb?
