Is Twittley better than Tweetmeme? I guess that answer depends on what you are evaluating the Twitter services on. From a bloggers perspective, I can say that Twittley is better than Tweetmeme and I will tell you why. First, let me start off by explaining what Twittley and Tweetmeme are. They are both Twitter tools that combine an element of social bookmarking with the power of Twitter. Both services provide buttons that bloggers could add at the top or bottom of their blog posts and the readers could click the button and tweet your post. At this point in time, Tweetmeme is the biggest and most recognizable service of this kind. In my opinion, this will change in the next several months. The reason is that there is a better tool and the name is Twittley.
Why is Twittley better than Tweetmeme for bloggers? Here are three main reasons to support my opinion:
- Twittley is more powerful and sophisticated. Tweetmeme simply aggregates and counts the number of times a link has been tweeted and displays the most popular links on their site. Twittley utilizes a proprietary algorithm that weighs your vote based on a variety of factors such as number of followers, frequency of tweets, retweets, etc.. You are also rated and provided a karma score that determines how much weight your vote counts for.
- Tweetmeme is more prone to spam. Twittley is much harder to game due to their weighting algorithm. To get on the front page of Tweetmeme, all you have to do is set up 50 Twitter accounts right now and retweet your post. With Twittley, that will not work because those newly created Twitter accounts will not count for anything.
- The last point I want to make, and the most important differentiator is the fact that by using Twittley, you can keep your visitor on your blog. With Tweetmeme , it directs you to Twitter, where you have to login and then tweet the post. It is cool that somebody took the time to retweet your post, but most of the time that visitor will stay on Twitter and will not return to your blog. By using Twittley, you only have to log on once and then when you click the “tweet button” the post is tweeted and your vote is registered. All of this happens behind the scene and the visitor is never directed to Twitter and you can keep them on your site. Hopefully, they will read another post and tweet that one as well.
These are the three main reasons why I switched over and replaced the Tweetmeme button with the Twittley button.
Have you made the switch yet? Are you using Tweetmeme or Twittley?

I still like tweetmeme and there is a reason. It is the most used. Secondly you can keep your visitor on your blog by tweetmeme that is if your users sign in to tweetmeme.com after that tweeting is instantaneous.
One of my post got 157 retweets so why should i change?

@Gautam-
You bring up an interesting point regarding Tweetmeme’s popularity. This is the very reason why I do NOT like it as much. Kind of why I like Mixx and Propeller better than Digg. It is much easier to get noticed and get on page one. I have never reached page 1 with tweetmeme and I have already done it 3 times with Twittley. Did you make it to page 1 when you got the 157 retweets?

A few good points by Gautam that I would like to address.
1) Tweetmeme did integrate OAuth (after we did) so they do have the one-click ability now. It was one of the few things they bothered to do over the course of the last several months. We, on the other hand, add new functionality almost every day.
2) Your post got 157 tweets, keep in mind that the number of tweets is not a function of the platform. If you get 157 tweets and not a single one of them is due to Tweetmeme, they still show you 157 tweets (we do work in a similar fashion though). They simply use the Twitter API to count the number of tweets. We have a post on our front page with 4k tweets, I’ll tell you right now, it’s not due to our traffic.
3) Tweetmeme counts tweets equally, a tweet from 50 spam accounts has the same weight as a tweet from 50 of the top twitterers in the world. We don’t do that, we look at the number of followers, followed, age of account, Twittley activity, tweet activity, click through rates, etc… and use all that information to calculate an overall score for the item in question (we still only show you the total numeric votes though). Note how there are items with 7 votes outranking items with 4k votes on our homepage currently.
4) As our esteemed host points out, it’s still easier to get to the front page of Twittley than it is Tweetmeme, especially considering the anti-spam measures we currently have in place. I’m not promising that it’s going to stay that way forever though.
5) Our tweets are less obnoxious and self-promoting than Tweetmeme’s are. Are you promoting your site or Tweetmeme’s?
6) Tweetmeme has a single button to pick from, we currently have two (two different sizes and types) and are working on allowing users to create their own custom buttons for their blogs. Have a red themed blog? Use a red button. Have a race car blog? Create a race car button instead.
7) We’re working on something that will completely blow Tweetmeme out of the water at the same time as make these smaller changes. If we pull it off, functionality-wise there will be no comparison between the two whatsoever from an end-user point of view. But that is weeks or potentially months of coding down the road so we continue to roll out incremental improvements almost every day.

@Joel Vaillancourt I will surely join if you start your custom design button. Because that is the feature which is lacked in tweetmeme and which i want so badly. But i will still think if i should use twittley or not.
@tycoonblogger I didn’t get to the first page though

I have to disagree! twittley is not better than tweetmeme. I like the look, design, and content quality far better on tweetmeme. That’s not to say twittley is poor because I like that site as well. Too bad I can’t use both widgets when I add the tweetmeme the twittley widget no longer works. Odd huh?

I can’t speak personally for Tweetmeme, as I’ve never used it, but a lot of bloggers swear by it, so it can’t be that bad. I tend to avoid trends and fads, but what attracted me to Twittley was the fact that the voting was more complicated than some big popularity contest, and the fact that it integrates so seamlessly with Twitter and makes it uber easy for your readers to forward your articles. Maybe Tweetmeme will feel the burn and get better in the coming months? Who knows, but I feel that the only thing Tweetmeme has on Twittley is their userbase… period.
And remember that there was a time when Myspace was more popular that Facebook.

I have been using Twittley for a while and really like it. The one thing that bugged me was when you installed it the button not only showed up on your blog posts, but it was also on all your pages as well… so there was a button on my contact page, about me page, etc…. Fortunately in this last update they fixed it so you can choose it not to show up on those pages.
