What is the best blogging community for bloggers?

As a blogger I am always looking for new avenues to promote my blog .  We all know that social networks and social bookmarking sites are a great way to exposure your blog content to a wider audience and gain traffic to your blog that you will hopefully convert into regular readers.  I have experimented with many of these sites and some have worked better than others.  Like most bloggers, I started with Digg, and discovered after a couple of months that Digg does not care for blogs about blogging.  I have been having a higher level of success with blog specific social communities.  For a blog like Tycoon Blogger, these smaller blogging communities are a much better way for me to meet new bloggers and gain a bit of traffic and back links as well.

What is the best blogging community?

Well, I am not sure, the jury is still out on this one.  I have been trying out some new communities lately and have been watching the referral traffic to help me decide where I should focus my efforts.

Let me start off by saying, that I am not talking about Blog Catalog or MyBlogLog, I think those sites are week, I never really was attracted to those sites.  I am also not talking about sites like Xanga or Today, where you blog on their platform.  Seriously, why would I produce content for someone else to profit from?

What I am talking about are sites that are developed for bloggers by bloggers.  There are four such sites that I am a part of now.  Some are new and others are more established, they are all good, but not sure I am ready to declare one of them as the best blogging community for bloggers yet?

Blog Engage – I will start with Blog Engage, as this is the oldest of the group and the community I have been with the longest.  I have watched this community grow significantly over the last 3-6 months.  I have discovered some great new blogs and it seems like you can always find a new blogger who is worth reading.  In regards to traffic, the weird part is that the larger the site has gotten the less traffic I receive.  I not complaining as I view this as high quality traffic and I love the backlinks, but over the last 30 days, I have only received 68 visits.  The interesting part is that I have received over 68 votes, so clearly a lot of people are voting for me but not visiting me and reading my post.

MMO Social Network – This site was established several months ago and has been growing steadily.  I am happy to say that I was one of the first to join this community.  This community is also very targeted and I have seen my referral traffic increase each month.  In the last 30 days, I have received 52 visits from MMO Social Network.

Blogger Den – I am not sure how I discovered Blogger Den and not sure when it started but I have been submitting all of my posts there for the last two months.  Most of my posts hit the front page as it only takes 4 votes to hit the front.  The thinfg I have noticed here is that there is not much community interaction at all but I do not mind as I am happy to keep getting pr 4 backlinks everytime I hit the front page.  I do get a little traffic as well; 26 visits last month.

Blogger Luv – Last but not least, the new kid on the block, Blogger Luv.  This is a community that is about a week old but is generating a lot of buzz and has a lot of momentum.  This site has the potential to be “the hub” for the blogging community.  The site design allows for a lot of easy interaction.  You can easily submit you latest blog posts, add photos, videos, and the site is also great for link building.  This site seems to blend the social interaction with the blog content very nicely and because of that I think there is a great future there.

In closing, I am not sure what the best blogging community for bloggers is.  I think time will tell, until then I will see on all four.

What do you think the best blogging community is?  Are you active on any of these?  All of these?

  1. Interesting comments. Blogevolve and Blogger Party have had their day, the former the former taken over by sploggers.

I am only using Twitter and Facebook for all my blogs and I its easy for me to share what's on my mind.

  3. All blogging communities have their own little piece to contribute in its own dynamic way. The best blogs are probably created by taking all the successful pieces of previous blogs and stitching them together. Great post and makes me think. Keep rolling with it!

  4. That’s great shate. All the three of them are seems to be good but I think Blog Engage is the one of the most popular when it comes to blogger community.

  5. Blog Engage is the one of the most popular when it comes to blogger community. I used to give some quality traffic from Blog Engage.

  6. BlogEngage is the only one I even know from the list, other haven’t even heard of them before.

  9. I can’t believe what I just happened upon. First off I thought the list of blogging communities was a great list, and I must say something I have to get involved with. As of right now though I’m not sure which one I will be looking into mainly because of the above conversations. For one thing I can’t believe because of someone’s view on a comment, that the owner of the “blogging community” would ban a fellow blogger because of his comment on a post. I guess we will all make up our own educated minds after reading this parsing that we have witnessed here. jj

I’ve been fairly active in Blog Engage for the past few months. I’ve seen but haven’t really tried MMO and just recently signed up for Bloggerden after reading this article.

I can proudly say though I was the 1st one to signup on BloggerLUV and would like to see it grow big and remain sort of the self-moderated community that it is right now.

All these communities work together and benefit bloggers in the long run and it really is up to the blogger to personally find which community is best.

I’m motivated my people first money second and banked 400 cash today :)
I’m saying this right now Blogger Luv is not MY site even people I don’t like are welcome to join.
Yes there is one rule >>>Have FUN :P
People that added their ads seem to be loving the site and I have yet to hear anything negative. The site polices itself everyone is a moderator I don’t care about the site other then I hope it works.
The site is merely a small way of paying back to blogging which has changed my life.
I hope the site does the same for everyone.
Remember the Have fun part as it’s a unique activity driven site :) The more you….

Judging by Brians comments I doub’t I will even bother trying his, you are hypocritical Brian, you bash others when they even say the traffic is not worth it, whatever, then, in your own comments you say the same crap about the other communities…lol

I use all of the services you mentioned and probably a few more that I can’t think of right now.

Personality clashes, and dofollow, nofollow conflicts aside, here’s some basic facts that I’ve noticed so far.

BlogEngage has sent a ton of traffic to my blogs and I have met most of my blogging friends there.

MMOSocialNetwork has completely changed my thinking about the whole MMO community. I used to think they were all scammers with sites full of spam links. But that is not the case I feel totally safe on that site and I enjoy networking there.

BloggerLuv LOL, all I can do is laugh because it is pure fun! My AdSense earnings increased already and I just put the ads up Sunday night.

I searched for one of my keywords the other day and to my surprise what showed up on the first page of Google was a link to my post on Bloggers Den. I say to my surprise because I forgot I even added any links over there!! So I’m going to spend some time there and show some support.

I know that you never thought this post would bring out this conversation, but now I’ll go back and read it so I make sure I didn’t miss anything else.

Hi Dan thanks so much for mentioning us in your article! I’m a huge fan of blog engage and always will be. I’ve seen it makes small bloggers into popular bloggers over night and Ileane is an amazing example of what blog engage can do for the average blogger.

Yes blog engage requires interaction and participation from our members and it’s been like that from day one.

Anyone that has an issue with this isn’t someone we want as a member anyways because we are looking for real human being blogers not spammers.

I’m a member of MMO but I rarely use it. I don’t’ have time to put the amount of efforts over there because I’m busy trying to make blog engage work.

We have lost some members to their website but that’s fine with me to each their own and the blogospehre is so big we need not worry about these small things.

The same goes for bloggersden. I am a member but don’t have enough time to participate to see any traffic so I simply don’t visit.

I have never sued bloggerluv and don’t plan on using it anytime soon either. Not that I don’t want to but again my time is limited.

One site you missed that is pretty cool and upcoming is named bloggers.com you might want to have a peak it seems promising.

  23. bbrian017 says:

@Keith, Adding the blog engage image to your blog means a lot to our community. Everyday I try and promote this website so you and other members can benefit from the traffic and potentially get new readers.

Not wanting to add the image shows a lot about ones character and says nothing negative about a Do Follow community but rather an individual. It’s rare when I hear complaints about this but it does happen and I’m sorry if it has been bugging you.

Blog Engage was meant to be a community of sharing and promoting one another and this also means helping promote us. Adding the image lets people know about us and brings more users to our website.

I really appreciate how you have added our image to your website Keith and I won’t forget it. Thanks you.

We are a do follow blog community that respects one another and by having the image you are representing a brand of new age blogosphere and blogging.

Regarding the loops you must go through and the mountains your must climb I really don’t understand the issue.

We ask our members to treat other bloggers the way they wish to be treated. We are not a community where you submit content and leave, if you somehow got that impression you were mistaken. We are a community that engages with one another building relationships and community interaction.

Blog Engage needs your hard work, attention and dedication. When it’s done right you don’t need to be anywhere else because we have everything a blogger could ever need.

You get out of life what you are willing to put into it! The same rules apply for blogengage.
.-= bbrian017´s last blog ..The Worst Advice on Blogging =-.

    • bbrian017 says:

@Keith, like I said Keith this is the way it is and it’s not up for negotiation. Your negative, no follow attitude will only get you so far in blogging.

It’s bloggers like you that we are trying to avoid at blog engage. Anyone that is too selfish to add a social image and promote a great website is not welcomed in our community.

Blog Catalog does it and look at them, they are the top 3000 websites on the net!

Bad business decision I guess huh? And like you they are no follow. Maybe that is a more appropriate place for you to hang out form now on.

I have removed and banned your account from our community. We can use less bloggers with your attitude in this world.
.-= bbrian017´s last blog ..The Worst Advice on Blogging =-.

    • Brian, there’s an inherent problem with your logic in the statement – “Anyone that is too selfish to add a social image and promote a great website is not welcomed in our community.”

You just automatically assume it’s a GREAT website? What happens if I think it’s just ok?

I subscribe to over 300 blogs, do you think I link out to and/or retweet every post on all of them? Of course not. I do so *only* on the specific ones I believe to provide the highest amount of value to me and those withing my circle of readers & followers. That’s maybe 1% of the total blog posts that come through my RSS reader. Does that mean I’m not supporting the other 99%?

I run a forum with 10,000+ members and only 1-3% of them are ever active posters. It’s likely no matter what I do, this number won’t budge much. The strategy in increasing participation though would either be to:

      1. Get more new members to add potential participants. The larger the overall user base, the larger the active 1% gets.

      2. Provide *more* value to users that hopefully gets the current inactive members back to visit the forum more often.

I deal with 1000′s of people regularly on sites within that niche who post on other forums actively and not mine. There’s no ill will there at all… it’s just that my community doesn’t fit their style, type of discussion, subject matter, etc. I can’t blame them for this. All I can do is either look elsewhere to attract people who *would* find value in my forum – or add additional value to it that is more in line with what “competitor” forums have to offer than I don’t. It’s not their fault. It’s mine.

When you see people not coming back to your site regularly, not participating often enough, not willing to promote your site much if at all… instead of lashing out at *them*, take a look in the mirror first and turn the blame in your direction.

You can only control your own actions, not others. So focus your energy on that instead of letting everything implode.
.-= Jordan Cooper´s last blog ..Don’t Worry About Privacy… No One Cares About You =-.

    • @bbrian017, That you would compare linking to someone a mark of someone’s character is appalling and it’s the number one reason that people are getting fed up with the way things are working online. Are you linking to me? Is that a revelation of your character? Of course not.

I have to side with Keith on this. A community that controls members and forces them to comply with regulations at their own blogs…which is outside your site…is not a community that I would want to be a part of.

I’m glad that it’s working for you, but a lot of people want to be able to blog their own site without someone forcing them to add links except to material that they feel is really useful to their readers.

  24. Wow great minds think alike. I just wrote an article on this very topic.

@Ricky, Hey Rickey sorry your not having luck with blog engage anymore. Many people say it’s great and traffic is high.

It’s very rare when people that say they enjoy stumbleupon or digg more. in fact 90% of the time it’s the very opposite.

Perhaps if you started using the site and participating more you would get further and build on more relationships.

As I stated above stumbleupon is a waste of bandwidth for bloggers. but if your into high stats that are no good for anyone but a traffic post then your’e good to go.

Hopefully we will see you back and giving it another shot.

  27. Andy Bailey says:

I never have time to be part of a community site or blog group because I am always knee deep in code! I prefer to make the things that bloggers use rather than find other peoples :) (even if I do use someone elses, I’m guaranteed to take it apart within a few days to see how it works or how I can make it do want I want)

That being said though, I joined blog engage at the beginning and others that have come and gone (no experience of mmo or den) and one thing I noticed was that the owners always strive to make money before content or usefulness which eliminates the ‘feel good’ factor or the community spirit that it was (I imagine) designed to foster.

I don’t condemn them for it though, it used to be the way. Get money, make site, make more money.

It’s not a business model I can subscribe to, my own commentluv site only charges for the things that cause the server to cost more money. Registration and use of it is free for the basic blogger and it started as a single wp install and as it grew in popularity and started earning revenue (albeit a few pennies from adsense) it went through a series of upgrades until it has got to where it is now (still not finished yet, thanks!)

Bloggerluv doesn’t seem to follow that model, that kind of follows my own path of providing what people want and when they use it, they realize it’s useful and because it’s not dollar-dollar-dollar! it rewards the users before the owner which in turn, attracts the ‘right’ kind of blogger.

When you get the ‘right’ kind of blogger using your service, you attract even more of the same.

Before you know it, people are spreading the site or service to their friends via word of mouth. And then, well, then comes the traffic and along with it, opportunity.

Traffic and Opportunity will inevitably make money, it’s simple maths. If you get a thousand people using your service and recommending it and your traffic and status go steadily up, people with money will want to be part of it and offer you opportunities to make money. wash, rinse, repeat.

Look at twitter, has it made money yet in any consistent way? only just now is it starting to, but everyone knows it’s been worth millions (perhaps billions) for a long time.

So +1 for BloggerLuv as the site to join if you’re a real blogger, someone who engages with readers because of the need to share and not just because some xyz cash guru says they should.

I have had some interaction with John who runs it and I can see he is passionate about making a site for bloggers to use and not a place for bloggers he can abuse and it will reward him when the time comes and I think he knows it so there’s little chance of him cutting open the golden goose for it’s eggs. Do you expect people to go visit your blog for nothing in return? You have to be more positive and try harder to meet and interact with new members.

Remember nothing is for free in life you have to give people a reason to visit your blog. If your traffic is down perhaps it’s time to look at your blog content.

There can be many reason why people don’t visit your blog from blog engage and trust me it has nothing to do with he community or its rules.

I hope even the people I had disagreements with join and the site is for fun and a place to connect with BLOGGERS specifically.
I did write a spicy post on my main blog today called is Social media fake ? and realized it was only a post taking shots at old friends and I put it back into draft and stepped back I later wrote a post called IS Love a science? We all make mistakes and fall short I was sad that most of my long term friends couldn’t be bothered but then focused on the excitement watching the #bloggerluv twitterstream.Anyway it’s all a learning process and I do hope to continue to challenge myself to be the real John Sullivan. @John Sullivan, Well said jsinkeywest. I too have been a knucklehead on more than one occasion and not that it’s not getting me anywhere (and it isn’t and won’t) but it’s really not who I am. I use it as a defense mechanisim at times like a kid in a school yard by the way. But I am probably one of if not the most forgiving person out there. I always tell people don’t take me serious all the time. However having said that I’ve learned that I am not at home or in the schoolyard anymore when I am online and it reaches a far greater audience and has a much more adverse impact when done online. So I have vowed to be more friendly and like you did put it in draft for at least 24 and then decide. Usually I delete it after that. Makes for good practice and release that doesn’t affect friendships even if they are long distant. It’s not about me it’s about us and the sooner we that haven’t figured that out yet figure it out the more loving we will be. THAT’S WHY I LIKE BLOGGERLUV’S COMMUNITY.

Thanks for letting me have a piece of your space for a spare moment Dan. Peace to all those feeling uncomfortably emotionally right now. May you come to bloggerluv and get you some!

I like this list. As you said, “developed for bloggers by bloggers.” I joined Blogger Luv yesterday. I’m going to check out Blogger Den.

Thanks Dan. Have a good one.
