Twitter is a great way to drive traffic to your blog, we all know that. What exactly are the best methods to make that happen? Every blogger has their own methods and tricks that they employ to get the most out of Twitter. If you are just using twitter as an extension of your rss feed and sending out tweets only when you publish a post, you are simply scratching the surface on the potential traffic you can gain from Twitter. Here are some techniques that have been working well for me lately
I have a three tweet per post rule that I have adopted. Let’s face it, people are busy and not everyone is glued to Twitter day and night. A lot of tweets slip through the cracks. When I first started on Twitter, I thought people would get irritated if I sent out several tweets about the same thing. The reality is that I have had no complaints and very rarely do I get unfollowed. The trick of it is to not send the exact same tweet three times. I have found that just tweeting, “new blog post: …,” is not nearly as effective as asking a question that is related to your post then linking to your blog. People want to interact and be engaged and do not want information just thrown at them. I also will send a tweet when the comments start flowing in and highlight the best comment.
The example above involves sending out tweets to the 400 followers of @tycoonblogger. Here are the methodologies I use to expand that universe and promote my post to an additional 10,000+ Twitterers.
- I use the plugin “tweetmeme” and it adds a “tweet” button to my blog post and makes it very easy for my readers to tweet my post to their followers with one click.
- I have been using two brand new sites called Tweet My Link and Tweet My Post. The sites are very similar and work in the same way. Both sites are social bookmarking sites that will tweet your post when your story hits the front page, broadcasting your link to over 4000 people.
- Through building a strong network of bloggers I routinely “trade” tweets with friends and usually get an additional 5,000 eyeballs on my tweet.
- I use a site called ReTweet.it. This is a great tool that allows you trade tweets with other members. You have to send out two tweets and then you get a credit to send out one. It is a very cool and useful service.
Since using these techniques I have seen my blog traffic more than double. I hope you experience the same results.
I don’t really use the methods you mentioned, I didn’t know about a couple of them though so I will give them a try. I do like the TweetMeme button but it doesn’t seem like any of the tweet social bookmarking sites like Tweet My Post have hit it big yet like Digg.
BTW Do you track your Twitted links to see which tweets perform the best??

I admit that I use twitter but just don’t get it yet. I see the value if your promoting your website though, and if you are doing that do you wait until you have some followers first then start with the links or start right away.

I used tweetmypost for one post and started to see some traffic, I haven’t done any tweet exchanges with friends, I have been retweeting some of my posts, and I never heard of reTweet.it but I will check it out right now.

As you say that your blog traffic has nearly doubled since you started tweeting, I have to wonder if I’m missing the boat.
I suppose I’ll have to make some time to focus on this method again and give it a more honest try.

Very interesting idea. Like the fact you ask question to get people to look at it. I also think sending 3 tweets at seperate times maybe morning noon night would work great.

I find that once you build a group of followers that trust you on twitter you can send them to lots of links and people will be happy to click. Just don’t take advantage of them.

If u ll create a new twitter acc. then anyone can promote it on your site in a highly visible spot. Changes are if you follow 100 bloggers, 75 or so will likely follow you back. This should get you 100 followers in no time. At this point you want to interact with your followers. It is ok to promote your site and your recent blog posts but it is also a good idea to share seo information from other sources.
I am impressed with the content of the article. I have been trying this method and I have seen some real improvements. This method is very useful.

I would also search some of the twitter directories and search on “seo” and start connecting with people in your niche. This should get you 100 followers in no time. At this point you want to interact with your followers. It is ok to promote your site and your recent blog posts but it is also a good idea to share seo information from other sources. This should get you started ain the right direction.

The cool thing about Twitter is that you do not have to spend a ton of time. Just a few minutes a day will work wonders.
