I use backtype, but not to keep track of others so much as to keep track of where I am leaving my comments so that I can go back and check if anyone has replied to something I left, seeing as how not everyone uses the 'subscribe to comment' plugin. I think I have been using backtype pretty much since almost the beginning.

What you didn’t mention is how it can also be used as a research tool, to get a better look at the history of the commenters on your blog, with regards to fighting comment spam.

Sometimes if you are not too sure if a comment is spam or not, looking up the commenter (or the site he links to) on backtype can yield an answer.

It’s also a type of social bookmarking, much in the same way some other services are. And when combined with something like friendfeed, it can allow others to promote your posts to their followers without any extra work.

If you add it as a service on friendfeed, every comment you make that backtype catches will be posted to your friendfeed account.

And if you have it set up to do it, it can then be posted from your friendfeed account to your twitter, as well, although I don’t do that, myself, because I think it can be a bit annoying to flood my twitter followers with all of my friendfeed stuff, so I limit it to just a few services.

Interesting stuff… as you have mentioned , you can track the commenting method of the big guys. It also does open a whole new list of blogs on which you can comment!
