Top 10 Social Bookmarking sites

I am moving into month 2 for this blog and it is time for some heavy promotion.  One of the best ways to get backlinks and a little bit of traffic too is to submit your blog posts to various social bookmarking sites.   For those that do not know, social bookmarking is when you save your favorite sites on a bookmarking site and they are then made public so others with similar interests can follow what you are following.  That is all well and good, but I love social bookmarking sites because of the backlinks.  Each time you submit a blog post, you gain a backlink, and many times a link to an inner page.  The more baclinks you have the better your site will rank with the search engines.  There are a couple of things to keep in mind.  Not all social book marking site sites are “do follow”  If you are not sure what do follow is, here is a link to an earlier post    http://tycoonblogger.com/2009/03/19/uncategorized/tycoon-blogger-joins-the-do-follow-movement  For example, Delicious is not “do follow” and I do not bother with them.  My time is valuable and I want to make sure I am maximizing every minute of my day.

Here is a list of my top 10 social bookmarking sites that I utilize; they are all “do follow”:

·         Digg (My favorite)

·         Propeller

·         Mixx

·         Spurl

·         Bloghop

·         Slashdot

·         Furl

·         Backflip

·         Redditt

·         StumbleUpon

I also always submit to Stumbleupon, although it is not “do follow” it is one of my best traffic sources and well worth the extra effort.  I know there are many more sites, in fact, there are over 400 at last count.  Obviously, no one has time to submit to them all that is why I choose these 10 because they are easy and effective.

Reddit and SU are my favorite. I get the most traffic from them and I find them great resources myself to find great sites that I want to read.

Digg, Reddit and SU offer the best traffic in my experience. I have gotten a few articles to the front page of Mixx and Propeller but neither give much traffic, even compared to a ‘so-so’ appearance on the other three.

Of course, this is if you want pure traffic and not the direct link juice.

I currently use two groups of social sites: One for my general interests, and here’s only Facebook, I’ve left all the others. I only add friends I know, don’t share my blog links, just update my status once in a while and post some pictures from yesterday’s party to tag the friends. Some use Facebook for bookmarking, I don’t.
The other group is digg, del.icio.us, StubmleUpon, Mixx, Twitter, etc. I share my blog posts there and read what others share on similar topics. Great for new ideas for writing too.
Interesting you put Slashdot here… Are your posts listed on Slashdot? I only read the news there, don’t submit anything, just comment sometimes…
