First off I want to say Thank You to all my friends that emailed me and sent me messages via Twitter and Facebook to let me know my blog was acting goofy over the weekend. I attempted to change my theme on Saturday and when I pressed “activate theme” it showed a server error 500 message. I called my hosting company and got that fixed. When I went to try again, this time I got a 404 error. It seems like it was theme specific because I tried other themes that worked. The really weird part is that I installed that same theme on another blog and it worked fine. Long story short, I (luckily) paid for remote backup and I simply loaded up my original pages onto the server. What a pain in the ass! I was all pumped to spend my days off from my day job improving my blog but I was just dealing with the head aches all weekend.
I am glad be back up and running and blogging about tips to promote my blog . This post is a follow up to a post I wrote several months ago entitled Promote your Blog with Linkedin . I want to focus on one technique on Linkedin that has worked very well for me on my career blog .
Using Linkedin Groups to Promote Your Blog
For many bloggers, Linkedin is a distant third (or fourth or fifth or tenth…) on their list of social networking sites for blog promotion. For my career blog it has been proven to be my second best site in terms of referral traffic (Google is first.)
Did you know that you can join 50 groups?
One of the greatest features on Linkedin is the affiliate groups that you can join. There are thousands of groups on virtually any topic you can think of. If you are blogging about it, I guarantee you that there are multiple groups about it. Once you join your 50 groups there are several ways to promote your blog. You can join in on the discussions. Treat this area like a typical forum, be helpful and don’t spam. The easiest way that I have found to promote my blog is by using the news feed. You can click the “add news” link and past your post url and then share that link with all 50 groups at the same time. I have been using this simple technique to add thousands of new blog readers per week.
[stextbox id="info"]Are you using Linkedin to promote your blog? How about Linkedin Groups?[/stextbox]

Yeah I'm in a few groups. I have a buddy that posts everything through linked in. I think he has some plugin or is using ping.fm to do it.

I haven’t really paid any attention to the features of Linkedin for brand/blog promotion, but I’ll probably look more into this now.
Hey Dan, Thanks for the Linkedin tips. I haven’t really done much with Linkedin yet but think I need to find the time and I will certainly use these tips.

I signed up for LinkedIn a while back but just found it plain boring and somewhat tedious thus I walked away. Seeing it’s your 2nd source of referral traffic, I might just hop back in

This is a great tip, I was just looking at how to use social bookmarking sites (and the likes) to promote blog articles.
And you are right, for most of us LinkedIn is not in the top5 of places to use for that… until now

Wow, didn’t expect LinkedIn to be such a great tool for blog promotion. I know it’s great for business connections but I guess it does make sense because a blog is really becoming the next resume.

Hey Dan!
Great tip – I was actually inside Linkedin and I saw this blog post there.
I like the tip but I don’t get how you can post your news feed to all of your groups at once. The only way I could see to do this new feed url link was going into each group one by one.
Also – wouldn’t a raw blog RSS feed be considered a bit spammy if you posted it to all groups you belong to – ie: not every blog post is going to be pertinent to every group. And as far as I know, an RSS feed is like a light switch – it’s either all on all the time or it’s off ( I guess you oculd crate a new RSS feed for each blog category and post those RSS feeds to te appropriate groups…
Anyway- if you want to go the “all on: route – how do you post your blog’s RSS feed to all your Linkedin groups at once?
.-= Don Power´s last blog ..Using Social Media as a Networking Tool for Your Business =-.
@Don Power, Hi Don – I post an individual link not the entire rss feed. What you do is click on the “submit a news article” link. When you press continue it will open up a share news box. There will be a groups field and the group you are in will be highlighted in gray. What you do next is start typing the name of another group in the group text field. It will autocomplete. For example, if I type in “N” it will show “Niche Bloggers” You click that and keep doing it until you get all the groups you want in the field. You then hit “shareL and presto your link is sent out to all those groups. I hope that helped.
@Dan Keller, Cool – I’m going to follow your instructions and give it a try. Thanks Dan. Going to RT your post now too!
Cheers!
- Don
