How to get more blog comments

Posted by Dan Keller in Promoting Your Blog on 04 3rd, 2009 | 40 responses

I have been very pleased with the amount of comments I have received so far on this blog.  I wanted to write a post to highlight what I have done so far to encourage this and how you can get more comments on your blog.

·         Make your blog “do follow.”  If the person who comments will be able to get a solid backlink this will encourage them to comment and follow your blog to comment in the future.  This is especially true if your blog has page rank.

·         After you make your blog do follow or “no follow free” it is important to let people know about it.  I have done this in several ways.  I have posted in webmaster forums and let other people know.  I mention it right below the comment box in my blog.  I also submitted my blog to several do follow blog directories.  I recommend DoFollowMovement.com . Disclaimer – I own this directory.  Do follow directories are great for traffic also because many bloggers go there to find blogs to comment on.

·         Install the CommentLuv plugin.  This will help because you are giving back and spreading the “luv” by displaying their most recent blog post.

·         Install the top commentators widget.  This will provide a link to the blog of your top 10 comment posters.  You also have the option to make this links do follow.

·         Ask.  This is the easiest one of all, just ask for them.  At the end of your post, ask for feedback or thoughts.  If you are building a list, ask what they would add.

These are 5 simple things you can do to increase the amount of commentators.

What do you do to increase the amount of comments on your blog?

I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don’t know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.

I’ve also been trying to get more commenters to by site, but the spam commenters drive me crazy. Do you think you could combine do follow and moderated comments effectively?

Ha Ha, I’m guessing that the answer to my question will be yes, since my comment was moderated.

    Thanks for the tip.

If you want comments do not be agraid to court some controversial opinion if you strongly belief in that opinion. its your opinion so if its stated properly you are not really right or wrong. Everyone is allowed to have an opinion. Don’t get me started on the cost of Adobe Creative Suites. Have to ever seen how many comments appear over on some large political blogs ?

I have been blogging for some time now with success but just learned about the do follow movement. Where have I been right? Anyway, great advice I too think it’s a must for those who need more comments on their blog.

It’s alright to encourage comments, but in my experience, for every reasonably “ok” comment, there are probably 10 inane comments. Watch out for spammy comments or spammy sites.

I’m proof that your tactics are working; I found your blog through the webmaster forums, and came by to explore your blog and comment. In addition, since you seem like a smart guy, I added you on Twitter aswell :)

I try to attract commentators related to my niche. This way, the comments are much more to the point rather than just dummy remarks.

Google frowns on do follow? I guess since they invented the no follow for a reason.

Good luck with the blog, I’ll be reading often.

Have just found your post in DP Forum. As someone who – occasionally – comments on blogs, I seek out 1/ those I like and 2/ those which are dofollow. If blogs meet both criteria, then I bookmark them for future use. Like many, I started blog commenting initially for the backlinks but have found that I have learnt some very useful stuff in the process. Keep up the good work.

@Poker – They do, at least for blogs. But they’re also fine with it for now… it’s just dangerous to have if you get seen as a link farm. The good thing is that they don’t hurt your SERPs, just your ability to pass on pagerank

    Hi Great article,
Like some of the other commentators on this post, my blog struggles with Spam and its hard to trawl through all the spam comments to get to the genuine ones.

I installed bad behaviour which in the last 7 days has stopped over 8,000 spam bots trying to comment on my site. SOme still get through, but I am getting there.

I love the layout of your blog, found it in DP forum.

    Keep up the good work.

Hi Dan, firstly I would like to thank for commenting on my blog.

For people who are afraid of spam, I feel that you don’t need to Over Advertise your blog as a DoFollow.

My blog is a DoFollow but no one knows about it, except my readers who enjoy the share of link juice, and I do monitor all the comments.

I am more interested in having people coming and commenting on my blog for what I write than for them to get another link.

I have DoFollow because I just feel that it’s fair in return, it’s my way to say thank you to those people.

Thanks for all the wonderful comments guys. The theme I am seeing here is that “do follow” is a good thing but you must be vigilant and watch out for spam. I am using the “WP- Spam free” plugin and it works great. There are some spammy comments that slip through he cracks, but it is easy enough to not approve them.

@Nicolas- You make a good point about advertising the fact that you are do follow or not. I think it is a good idea for a new blog starting out as it will drive a lot of traffic to your site and hopefully, your content is strong enough to turn them into subscribers and daily readers. On another blog of mine, I have comments tagged as “no follow” until the commenters make 3 comments.

I’ve done most of the things you recommend on one of my blogs – you’re right, it definitely increases the number of comments received. But once I got listed in a few dofollow directories, I did find the number of junk comments went up dramatically. So if you’re going to do this, make sure you moderate!

I think encouraging comments can help, but than you get those idiots that will say “okay”, “thnks” and stuff like that. I think writing things that are really exciting or controversial will get comments. Controversial is definitely an easier approach that just inspires people to prove you wrong and write really long rebuttals.
