Last week I wrote a guest post on BloggingAgenda.com about how to retweet on Twitter and why you should retweet. Today, I want to focus on 5 basic strategies you can employ to get more of your tweets retweeted. Here are some tips:
Write tweets that are 120 characters instead of 140, that way you will make it easier for the person to retweet it. If the person has to edit your tweet first, there is less of a chance that they will pass it along.
Spread the Love- If you read my blog often, you will see that this is a central theme throughout and it is very important in the Twitterverse. My rule of thumb is to give way more than I receive. A 10 to 1 ratio works well in my opinion. I find the more I retweet others the more retweets I get.
Don’t flood your followers with links. If you tweet too often and too close together your followers will either unfollow you or ignore you. If they don’t read your stuff it is impossible for them to share it with others. I limit my daily tweets to 3 self serving tweets.
Write something interesting. This is common sense, but make sure your tweet is entertaining or helpful. If it is not, just don’t send it. It is important to be selective with what you tweet and do not send out everything you publish to your blog.
Build your network. This is critical to success on Twitter. You have to make friends with people that have a propensity to retweet. It is also a great idea to build a circle of friends where you all agree to retweet each other. If anyone is interested in reciprocating retweets with me, just contact me here or email me at tycoonblogger (at) gmail.com
*Bonus Tip- These two sites will help you spread your tweets. I use them almost daily and on average my tweet reaches over 10,000 additional people.

Thanks for the valuable information. I am just starting with twitter and this is really going to help guide me on how to use this tool well. I have really been struggling on figuring out all these social bookmarking sites!
Ah gotcha, and not a bad strategy.

@Dennis-
I usually send out a tweet about a new blog post. Later in the day I will resend the same link but with a different variation, usually in the form of a question, “What is your strategy for getting more retweets.”
If the post is getting good buzz and good comments, I might send a tweet to that effect. Other wise, I may send out something about my other sites like TweetMyPost.com or BlogFluence.com or SubmitMyBlog.com, etc…
I am not trying to push clickbank products or anything like that, just trying to spur traffic..:-)

My personal opinion but – with the possible exception of posting 3 times per day and tweeting each, 3 per day seems excessive for self serving tweets.
What kind are they?

Really helpful comments. A lot of people are struggling to navigate their way in the twitter universe and trial and error is fine, only it leaves you annoying a lot of people as you try to find some balance. Thanks for the post.

@jonk- there is a lot of spam, but luckilly it is very easy to unfollow someone or block them.
@kris- I have found that tweeting something about Twitter is likely to yield a lot of retweets. People on Twitter love reading about Twitter. What is your Twitter id…I will follow you and pass along some RT’s for you/

I think the hardest one is trying to come up with something usefull for the followers. I have tried and tried to get retweeted, asking frequently, but to no avail. I will definatly take your tips into consideration when tweeting.
I really value those people who come up with something interesting or funny in their tweets.
Links are ok if they’re interesting or useful, but the constant spam some people put out makes me remove them straight away.
Just thought you should know. You might want to check your margin settings on those bullets as the first part of each paragraph is cut off in your feed. It’s better to set your margins etc in your stylesheet than to use inline styles.
