Should you monetize your blog or not? Every blogger has an opinion on this issue. Some people are fanatical about the latest trends and are quick to try the latest techniques, others implement a more basic strategy, some decide not to monetize their blogs at all. Then you have the bloggers who are never happy with their monetization strategies and are on a constant quest for new ways to earn their cash. These are only a few of the many views- there must be dozens of different opinions on this topic, and if you’re new to the idea of blogging for money, it’s easy to quickly get confused as to the right and wrong ways to do things.
I wanted to write my opinion and then share with some other bloggers thoughts on this topic as well. If you are a new blogger these insights should help you decide for yourself. It is important to keep in mind that all blogs are different and your niche will sometimes determine which strategy will work best. For some adsense is the answer and for others that will not work at all.
Here is my opinion in a nut shell. I am a proponent of making money blogging. We all know that blogging takes a lot of time and effort and why not make some money for your effort. Years ago making money from blogging was frowned upon. Popular sentiment today leans toward celebrating and respecting bloggers that are actually able to make money blogging. I actually cannot think of one single reason not to make money from your blog. Can you convince me otherwise?

I do monetize my blog and do hope that people click on links such as Google etc, but these days people seem to use ad blockers, which doesn’t really help us bloggers with a bit of, small, funding for our work!

I believe that money is directly proportional to the number of your blog posts in the search engines. The more the posts, the more will be the readership. The more the readership, the more will be the subscribers. The bigger the blog community, the bigger will be the popularity. Make money now. Be wise and improving! Be innovative!

I have google ads and advertise some other affiliate programs. If I make some cash then it’s a bonus, if I don’t then it’s still cool.
I agree with iWrite2Know, the more visitors you have the easier it will be to make cash.

I totally agree that we need to monetize our blogs. We put so much hard work into them that we should get something out of them.
As for google adsense, I would relay on just them. Affiliate programs are important.

All though at a glance it looks as if I do not monetize my blog, I actually do and do it in a way that has a few benefits.
I believe that anything you work on should have some monetization plan, either immediate or investment wise.

I think it’s depending on what is our goal for blogging. When I first started my blog, my intention was to make money online, so definitely I’ll monetize my blog.
Nevertheless, there is some people who just write their blog as a hobby and they enjoy the process of sharing their experiences.
Hence, it depends on what you want.

Lee

I don’t see any reason not to. It’s extremely common, so you might as well. Like you said, blogging can take a lot of effort so you might as well have the potential to make a few cents. I think every blog I visit has ads in some form.
To make money isn’t my primary intent with blogging, I do it first and foremost because I enjoy writing and being part of the community. But I have ads, and I am part of Amazon’s affiliate program. I don’t think it hurts my reputation as a blogger, because nearly everyone else does the same thing. I make a point that my ads not be intrusive, and most of them are relevant to my content.

Many people don’t monetize their blog from the very first day and IMHO this may be wrong.. Putting up advertisement on your blog is not bad or not unethical. Though the only thing which you need to take care is putting up advertisement at the appropriate place….and that should not disturb your readers…

It seems like we are all in agreement. It is wise to monetize.
@Harsh Agrawal- I think you are right when you say you should not disturb the readers… I think we are all looking for that balance of having as many ads as we can with being obnoxious or annoying.

I spend a lot of time on my blog. I hope even the few pennies that come in can give us incentive to carry on blogging as it’s great to express ourselves and earn a bit for ding it. Others make a killing out of blogging and good luck to them if they can why not?

I do try to monetize my blog, but I do not see much success from it. In all honesty, most people ad blind these days. Seems like you need HUGE amounts of traffic to make a decent amount of money.

I am all about monetizing your blog. Even though I enjoy blogging, if I couldn’t make money at it… I am not sure how long I would do it. I actually do have sites that I blog for the enjoyment and they will probably never make me any serious cash, and that’s ok… but I do need to pay the bills

Great conversation…
Some other ideas/ ways to monitize your blog that I am not using… yet:
1. Ask for donations.
2. Create a paid event or a webinar to showcase more of your info and answer questions directly.
3. Sell “deeper cuts” of your information as a PDF, ejunkie.com I hear has a good service.
4. Sell advertising to niche blog posts.

I am still a little new at the blogging scene, but am getting ready for a strong push with video marketing to help push along, not only the site, but also my main program.
My feeling is that monetizing is fine, as long as you are attentative to your blog and your readers needs, as I sincerely hope/intend to be to my site, but we all know how things can happen, don’t we?

Well, I have similar opinion just like you. Of course we should monetize our blog. because it take our precious time. Although for some bloggers, they do it to follow their passion.

I think in the beginning we must focus on creating the blog, its content, page rank and after that we must shift to monetizing our blog. Then way to increase the traffic must be used.
