Make Money with URL Shortener

What is your favorite url shortener?  I used to use tinyurl and then switched to bit.ly because it offered better tracking capabilities.  Over the last couple of months there have literally been hundreds of new url shorteners that have been launched.  I wanted to share with you a url shortening service that you can actually use to make money with.  The service is called ADf.ly and it works just like all the other services by shortening your url but you can actually make some cash each and every time someone clicks on your link.  Each time your link is clicked and ad will pop up for a few seconds while your link is loading.  You get paid based on the amount of page views.

I decided to take this for a test drive and created a new account today.  The one downfall to this is that this could really annoy your followers and sooner or later when someone sees the adf.ly url they may choose to ignore it instead of clicking through.  Luckily, I have 2 Twitter accounts.  I have my @tycoonblogger account as well as an account called @followyou2.  I created @followyou2 just for this very reason, to test new Twitter monetization strategies and Twitter follower strategies.

I will write a follow up post in 30 days and let you know if this is a real way to make money with your blog and Twitter or if it is a waste of time.

In the meantime, if you want to check it out for yourself, here is a direct link to the site:

Adf.ly

Is anyone using this?

Good idea or bad idea?  Let me know..

I have a URL Shortener site but I have not been able to make any money from it. Still looking for a viable ad opportunity that will not deter people from using my site! http://dr.tl

Not sure how I feel about the ads in a URL shortener.

Seems to be slightly on the shady feeling side of things, so it’s probably not something I would personally use.

If a bunch of people start using them, people will start to become afraid of clicking on shortened links, and the effectiveness of this type of advertising will drop dramatically.

Call us biased but we think our URL shortener is the best one out there for making you money. It is unobtrusive, pays you easy 50% commissions, has comprehensive stats tracking, and tools such as our FireFox Extension. You can learn about it here: http://www.eCa.sh

Interesting. I think I would find that annoying after a while. I wonder how many unfollow’s you’d get on Twitter because of it. Maybe worth checking out.

I use the Firefox add on Puny URL – it shortens the url address in your browser without copying and pasting before. You simply click the button in your toolbar area and then copy and paste the shortened url to your twitter-like field for us.

I try to only use shorteners for twitter where I am restricted on how much I can post in there. For everything else there is usually no point. Thanks for the advice about the paid adf.ly. Thanks.

    adf.ly is a rip

I use twitter and people/friends tell me my links are funny or made their day etc etc and I didn’t get credit for it on adf.ly … My sister even described the ad adf.ly presented. Its a rip…and yes I used it after the site was “upgraded/fixed”

I like budurl, which I use all the time for shortening the URL for twitter, but I have never heard about a program that will make you cash when people click on your link!

Sound quite interesting actually. I have always considered something like this, but just never really had the chance to test it out. Can’t wait to see the results.

I personally used TinyURL for my affiliate links and Xr.com for my twitter message. :)
I think all the URL shortener sites are almost the same, right?

@kai – You should really check out bit.ly, much better than tinyurl. The tracking feature is awesome and addicting.

@clickkt- that is a great post!

@George- I totally agree that over 90% of these companies will be out of business in less than 2 years.

@Dennis- Unfortunately, adf.ly does not have tracking capabilities

    Hi,

I don’t really use any URL shortener service, I find that you can visit any site as you don’t know where the link points to.

As for the ads popping up, that would annoy myself and I probably would not click on a similar link.

I do agree that there are many sites popping up offering url shortening. It would be nice to see how many are still around in another year or two.
