Most of the readers that stop by my blog are passionate about their blog and I know a lot of people would never even think of selling their blog. I have sold some blogs in the past but it would take a lot for me to part ways with this blog. It has been said that everyone has a price and I do believe that their is some truth to this saying.
The whole reason I am even writing about this topic is that I have discovered that one of the most famous blogs in the blogging tips niche has been put up for sale. If you have not heard, BloggingTips.com is on the auction block over at Flippa.com and for a cool 70 grand you can buy it now. The blog owner has put a lot of working into growing his blog as an authority site in this niche and it definitely helps that he has a killer domain name to help him along. He paid only $1,500 for that domain name 3 years ago. I think that is the deal of the century.
I wanted to get some reaction to this and hear what your thoughts are…
If you had the money, would you pay $70,000 for BloggingTips.com? What would you pay?
How much would it take for you to part with your blog? What do you think your blog is worth?
I wouldnt sell it for any price. well, maybe if somebody offered me a million dollars.
$70,000 for blogging tips is too much in my opinion

My blog is my life and will never sell it for any price.
I find this article very interesting. I never knew you can actually sell a blog. But isn’t that a bad idea? A lot of people read blogs ’cause they like the authors. Will the blogs still remain successful even after it is sold out?
My domainname is 10 years old and pr 7. so traffic is about 50 k so its like 20.000€
Very interesting. I don’t create blogs I’m more of a website person. I’ve sold most of my previous websites but with my new websites I’m keeping them and I will be growing them and gaining authority and hopefully dominate my niche’s. I do agree with ‘everyone has their price’ though. Thanks for this interesting post.
I guess that is the part of his exit strategy… 70K is good money… but it is not the most expensive that I have came across… there are a rare few that command up to ten of thousands and are bought over by big organization that see potential or act as a part of their overall business strategy.

I’d probably only sell my blogs or other websites if I felt the niche was on the down and out. People like Gerald Celente have some pretty dire predictions for the economy (esp. in the US) in the years ahead, so a blog that promotes shopping (for none essentials) might not be such a winner (if you believe the trends forecasters anyway).

I don’t know…I’m the kind of person who wants to start from scratch so I’m not going to buy it even for 10k.
.-= ZXT´s last blog ..Blog Monthly Stats =-.
I do not it’s a good idea to buy the blog for 70K. After all, it is related to make money online and this type of blog is hard to monetize, unless you are selling your own products or services directly on it.
Also, many readers will leave once the blog gets sold. I still remember Small Potato’s blog.
I personally feel that the 70k bill attached with bloggingtips.com is not worthy.. unless the blog is pushed to that worth. I prefer equities rather investing 70k on a website
Everyone has their price, but I would have to get paid really much in order to sell my blog which I have worked daily on since 2006.

Sorry for double comment.
I head over to Flippa and find the listing but couldn’t get it, do you mind to share the auction listing link here? I would like to see the bidding process.
Thanks,
Lee
Wow $70k is a big amount, but I believe that BloggingTips.com worth the price. The domain name itself can cost few thousands. But it’s a waste to sell a blog like this, it has the potential to earn up to $70k.
For me, I don’t have plan to sell my blog, but if someone could offer $30k (My blog don’t worth that much) to buy my blog, I could consider about that.
Can’t wait to see how much BloggingTips is sold.
Cheers,
Lee
Well, it comes to me as a surprise as to why Kevin (I know him personally and he is a great guy) wants to sell BloggingTips.com!
As for the price, if I had lot of money, i would have loved to buy BloggingTips.
My blog (TechChunks) is not even close to BloggingTips stats but over a period of 3-5 years it can reach there. If it can’t then I must be wasting my time and doing it wrong!

Regarding selling of blogs, in my opinion its good. The one who already made a blog successful and deserving a good value, now, he knows all the way from scratch upto that tip. He can work again and make another precious piece to sell again. What’s the wrong on selling blog and earning.
For the one who buys that blog too, paid for the work and time needed to raise a blog upto that state. Now he can start going up with already built solid foundation.
Creators are very few but managers can be a lot. Creators should continue creating and get higher value. After established a simple manager can keep on the work.

I don’t know what my blog is worth, probably not much, but if I was going to sell it sometime in 2010, I would want at least US $10,000 for it.
But I might say yes if somebody comes along offering me $5,000 … hehe!

The question for me is not about how much I can get for a blog, it’s about the likelyhood of that blog bringing me a passive income. I’m not interested in getting rich, per ce, but if a blog gives me enough to live off of with minimal maintenance, then the personal freedom that brings is worth far more to me than a fair valuation of it.
Therefore, I’d have to consider whether the lump sum would last me longer than the income of the blog would last. The amount of time and effort I personally like to put into content would rule out selling, starting a new one and using the cash for advertising.
But I guess you never really know what you’d do until the money’s there in your face!
I wouldn’t pay for a blog. A blog without its author is like a body without its soul. The readers are addicted to the content, not the domain. The site may continue as normal but without quality content its certain to crash.
Thats really a lot of cash. I am not doubting the authority and value of the Domain, but 70k is not what I can afford. But, I think it really has the potential to sell more more but not less..

70k is a little expensive me. I guess if I had the money (rich) and the site would make me what I invested than yeah I think it would be a good deal. I guess I could say that for any blog that was for sale.

I think i am not quite able to valuate the price of this blog but would like to add one thing that if i got $70,000 then i will take it.
Oh yeah, regarding selling my blog, I don’t think I would sell it. I plan on branding it into a bigger group, so selling the blog would mean that I’m also seling away the brand itself. Had I had a site like BloggingTips.com where the site’s domain is more general and does not specifically have a brand, I might consider.

Nope because I personally believe that I can share my blogging tips through other mediums. If it is for an audience that I can monetize, I think I still won’t because with $70,000, you can invest much more into other industries such as aff. marketing to reap a lot more than what a blog can offer you.

I have a couple of blogs that I would like to sell. I just don’t have the time to keep up with them. The domain names are pretty decent and think with some work could be developed and monetized. One is http://www.insureditall.com It is an insurance blog and has lots of good articles on it and could be monetized if the right amount of traffic could be generated. Send me an email if anyone is interested.
If I had the money and was wanting to work on a “blogging tips” type blog, I would definitely do it! However, I’d treat it as an investment, and would make “profit” my number one goal.
I’m not interested in selling my current blog at Swollen Thumb Entertainment for any price. That’s my life work, and I have big plans for it. Now, in the future when I open a 2nd blog, I’d be interested in selling THAT one.

I’m biased because when I was new me and Kevin went at it and I haven’t been by that site since LOL
70k hmmm all depends I guess
only because of the stigma of the word POT
I got a few to bounce to to reopen shop LOL
But while it’s still mine did you see that ad I put on my sidebar:)
it’s ranked for some choice keywords and I know Kevin has some serious skill and he has worked hard on it so I guess he has the 70 k coming

Great conversation guts. It seems like no body is jumping at this blog for 70k. It also seems like that is the case over at Flippa. I predict that doesn’t sell it after all. I guess we will see.

Even then the price is above level, its $70,000.
I think, he should not sell his blog because it has a lot of potential, and if marketed well he can earn the amount in a year or two.
The reason he might be selling the blog, will be because of scarcity of time

I wouldn’t pay 70 grand for that blog simply because I know I can do the same thing. Also, it would be more fun to start something from nothing rather than buying something that’s already been pre-made for you. This is also the reason why people should start a blog on a topic that they like – if it doesn’t pan out in the end (like if it’s not worth 70 grand after 5 years), then at least they enjoyed the journey.
Remember that there are a lot of people following the blog simply because of its author. When he leaves there will also be a lot of visitors following him.
Personally I would probably invest the money on a brand new blog by buying traffic and creating giveaways. People love them and you will most certainly get attention if you give away things with a high value.

If I had $70,000 then I actually wouldn’t have purchased the blog. Because I already own a blog under that niche and I am having not finding time easily for it daily so How I would handle such a big blog.
Rather than throwing all the $70000 in one single piece of blog, I would rather invest the money in setting up various E-commerce websites which will provide me continuous and steady income once I properly promote it

I’m not saying BloggingTips ain’t worth it, but I’d rather set up my own blog from the bottom-up than buy an existing one. However, if I had the experience and the dough of, say, Darren Rowse or ShoeMoney, I’d be tempted.
Would I part with any of my blogs if there was money on the table? Possibly. However, there are a few I’m very attached to, so I’d never sell.
Wow, 70k is alot of cash. If I had the time to work full time and the earnings were high enough, maybe I would go for it.
BUT I would rather start a site from stratch and let it grow than buying an existing and thriving one.

Phew!! 70k is a lot of money! I guess if your primary purpose of blogging is to earn money or earn a living, and are viewing the blog purchase as an investment, I’d look at the present value of the anticipated stream of income the blog would produce after my purchase. To pay 70k, I’d need to expect net income (income after all expenses) of at least 20-30k per year from the blog.
In this age of crazy internet valuation multiples, I’d bet that some people would pay 15-20 times earnings. So, these people might pay 70k for a blog with net income of 5k per year. To give a little perspective, Yelp turned down 550 million from Google. And Mashable has reportedly turned down offers from AOL (though the offer numbers haven’t been disclosed)

That is a good point Justin. That is why I am surprised that he is selling. I think that blog could make 70k per year if he pushed it.
If I were wealthy and wanted to “jump” into a popular site starting with an audience, I might purchase it. Heck, I would probably sell my site for a cool 70 grand, but mine doesn’t have nearly as good Alexa rank as bloggingtips.com with a 17k worldwide alexa rank.
For me though, I enjoy starting something from scratch and seeing what I can make it. I would also have to consider how much the blog can earn, if it couldn’t earn $70k in revenue in 5 years, then it wouldn’t be worth it honestly.
