Was the pr update a trick or treat for you?

Posted by Dan Keller in Blogging Tips on 10 31st, 2009 | 43 responses

First of, Happy Halloween to everyone!

Yesterday many of us bloggers took notice of the google page rank update.  It seems like it took forever for this newest update and this will probably be the last one for the year.

I am still at pr 3 and I am a little upset about it to be honest.  I am wondering what I have to do to get pr 4 or higher.  I have done all of the basic, I update my blog at least 5 times a week.  I comment on at least 50 “do follow” blogs every week.  I submit articles to ezine and other article sites.  I submit to blog directories.  What the hell do I have to do to get pr 4, do I have to buy links from high pr sites?

Although I am ranting and am truly upset about this, I am happy that my career related blog received pr 3 from pr 2.  The thing that is crazy about that is I do not update regulary.  I do not comment at all on other blogs using that domain.  I have not submitted to many directories at all.  I have not written any new articles in this latest update period.

In short, I have been busting my ass trying to increase pr on this blog and I have done nothing to increase pr on my other blog and they both have the same PR.

What’s up with that?

Anyway, I hope you got a treat from the big G this time around.  Let me know your stories regarding your pr change.

I regained back my PR4 for my blog which was lost in starting of October month for not following the Google guidelines i.e the ads were do follow and passing link juice which was against the “G” rules..

But thankfully, I filed in a reconsideration request and the result was that PR was given back in this update.

Dan, I have the same feeling with you, I’m upset when I saw many people had their PR3 and PR4 after PR updated, but my blog remained the same at PR3 for almost a year. In a year, I’ve updated my blog and left comments in quite many dofollow blogs, but the PR doesn’t climb up to PR4.

I have no idea what else I can do to make it PR4 too. Sad case…

I’m not sure what you have to do. I know this won’t make it seem any better but my site jumped from 2 to 4, with a lot of inner 2s and 3s and all I have been doing is pretty much the same as yourself.

However, lets not forget that PR doesn’t actually mean hardly anything at all, it’s almost pointless. If you’re site is getting the traffic you want then great, doesn’t matter about PR!

I went from 3-2 but it’s by far not a surprise due to my lack of blogging lately.

Slightly upsetting at the timing, considering my new ad promotion, but it all works out in the end.

As for your dilemma, there’s eally no trick to it. 3’s are not hard…beyond that, just keep building them backlinks bud. Good ones with uthourity.

Eventually if your site is around long enough your trust score will improve. I have a mission statement page with no backlinks and it just got a PR of 2. That’s after 2.5 years!

As for blog commenting I have just about given up on it. I only blog comment on things that show up in my Google Alerts. I am here today because your post showed up in G’s Alerts Since I haven’t visited in months I thought that I would say hell-o.

I invite you back as you always leave great and useful comments.

I only use bookmarking and social sites to build links these days.

It would be nice if your spam filter allowed me to use SEO in the name field.

To be honest i do not follow page rank updates as SEO rituals like it once was…

Those times are past i think that page rank values very low nowadays i would say… Proof of this is google removing page rank from webmaster tools…

I think its more of a signaling tool nowadays just in order for you to check if the website is banned or not…

I didn’t get a PR increase either, but I’m not that worried about it. What’s the use of having higher PR anyway? I can understand if you have ads on your blog and you get paid more by the advertisers if you have a higher PR. But otherwise, who cares what your PR is? It doesn’t affect your search engine rankings and it doesn’t affect your visitors’ satisfaction with your content. Correct me if I’m wrong, of course :)

Page rank is interesting to track but really what matters is how well your site does in search results (that is what I care about anyway). My “management blog” shows up as the 3rd result for that term which is great. A site for my father increased to page rank 5 with this update (it is in the top 10 for William Hunter). My personal site stayed at a 4 page rank and is third in the search results for John Hunter.

Don’t worry. If you look at the Maths that goes behind PR3 to PR4, you will understand why it is so difficult to jump each time after PR3.
PR4 to PR5 will take 3x times the effort you do from PR3 to PR4. :)

This update may be the last for the year but we surely have ‘Caffeine’ coming, who knows how things will turn out once this update is out.

I haven’t done any paid links. Mainly I have just been focused on providing good content and participating on other blogs. It was a nice boost to see the jump in PR.
