Another quick blogging tips post today, this post was inspired from a recent comment from one of my readers. Yesterday, Klaus from Tech Patio asked :
[stextbox id="alert"]By the way – what plugin are you using to display the amount of comments each commenter has written on this blog?[/stextbox]
Several other readers have asked this over the past several months and I figured I would respond here in a post rather that in the comment section.
The functionality that allows me to display the number of comments a commentator has contributed is actually bundled into the “Do Follow” Plugin that I am using.
The plugin I am using is called NOFF , which stands for “No Follow Free” , besides the cool option of displaying the number of comments someone has added, this plugin offer several other options. For example, you can set the amount of comments that someone has to reach before their comments become do follow. FYI, I have recently set the number to 4. This allows me to still be part of the do follow movement but helps me eliminate spam and stop the “drive by” comments.
Even if you want to remain a non do follow blog, you can still use this plugin to display the number of comments. You can simply set the threshold number to a number that nobody can ever attain, like 5,ooo comments.
Wow… super cool plugin, Dan! I really needed it. Thanks for sharing this

My recent post It’s Not Really What You Say- but How You Say It
I just thought of something pretty sweet. If I see someones left 50 comments on your blog, I’m gonna make friends with that person.

LOL @ 5000.
I’m still using Lucia’s-Linky-Love plugin (the first one created to allow number setting) but it only allows you to go up to 10 before do-follow kicks in…it also doesn’t have the numbering feature next to name this one does.
I may switch, thanks!

Very cool. Thanks for the link I’ll install that one now. I was meaning to add do follow links but I didn’t want to do it for everyone (in case I had some spammy links I accidentally approved in the past)

Thanks for the plugin details, this would be a nice extra to websites/blogs.
I’m really trying hard to minimize the number of plugins installed. It would be nice if this was part of the WP basic installation.
Thanks for sharing the tip. Actually, I didn’t realize that there was a plugin that accounted for a minimum number of posts before giving do-follow.
Oh, so you use this plugin. I heard about it before but never know that i can use it to show the number of comment.

It is a great plugin. I discovered it a few weeks ago when I want to add follow link to commenters on my blog.
Anyway, thanks.

I was looking for a bit different luxury than you have dealt in this post. But I’m afraid, if I’ll be asking a dumb question. Since I switched to WordPress very recent and still exploring the ground that may appear trivial for the experienced ones.
I was looking for some sort of solution so that I could display the number of comments at the end of post titles in home page. Can we find any plugin or hacking code is required. I don’t think this option is provided by default on WordPress.

I was wondering the same thing; Thanks for sharing the tip. Actually, I didn’t realize that there was a plugin that accounted for a minimum number of posts before giving do-follow. This could come in really handy. I’m guessing that it works hand in hand with the KeywordLuv plugin?
That is a very cool plugin. I was wondering how everyone was limiting their do-follow to a certain number of comments.

Thanks for making a post out of my question (and for linking to me)
I wonder how this will work together with “nofollow case by case”-plugin I’m using. Per default, everybody is “do follow” at my blog but I sometimes add “/dontfollow” to an URL and “nofollow case by case” will make the link nofollow. I do that to sites I’m not 100% sure about and when I don’t want risking to a potential bad site (as seen by google).
I’ll give it a try – thank you!
