In my opinion (please leave a comment if you disagree) if you want to become a serious blogger and be taken serious as a blogger you need to have your own hosting. I think you would be hard pressed to name over 3 well known bloggers that are using a blogspot free hosted platform.
When people ask me about tips for starting a blog, I always tell them to invest $8 in a memorable and brandable domain name (a .com is still best) and make the investment to buy web hosting . I truly believe that these are truly investments and if you are committed to blogging you should be able to make your investment back in a couple of months. I am not going to go into a diatribe about the benefits of hosting your own blog. Instead, I want take some time to discuss the various types of hosting options and how you can find the best deals.
Shared Hosting-
This is by far the most common type of hosting and the majority of blogs are on shared hosting. All of my blogs are on shared hosting. As the name suggests, on this platform you are sharing bandwidth and resources with other users. This allows the price to be very reasonable with this option.
Dedicated Hosting -
If you choose this option you will have your own dedicated server and will not have to share with anyone. This will allow you to customize your server for your specific needs. Obviously, this option will cost you more than shared hosting.
VPS Hosting -
This is a newer hosting option that is gaining popularity. VPS stands for virtual private servers and it works by separating areas within a single server to create multiple virtual servers within it. In terms of cost, the price is right in the middle.
How do you find the best deals on hosting?
In my opinion it is smart to ask other bloggers what they use and recommend. I also recommend you visit some websites that feature a variety of options and compares features, benefits and price. If you would like my recommendation…I an VERY happy with Fatcow. Great customer service and the best price you can find for the quality. Plus, they offer one click, super easy wordpress installation.

I use host gator and think they’re wonderful. You are so right that you should use a hosting and a decent domain name if you want to be a serious blogger. I wouldn’t rush into it though – you can always transfer stuff over later when you’re sure its something you’ll do for the long haul.

I would agree with you. I prefer to host my blog, so that if I am tired of my blog, I can sell the blog and make some money. It is not really possible to sell a free blog because your personal details is already included with the blog.

Buddy, I regret that I didnt get a chance to read a post like this before I bought my hosting
I got burnt and actually robbed blindly. One of the famous hosting providers ate a good chunk of my money promising a ready to use wordpress installed hosting. After buying it only I realized there are much simpler and cost effective ways to do it. But thats a good lesson for me. I wont do it anymore and will save my friends also by referring them to this post.

Absolutely agree that the investment of a few dollars in a domain name, and a few more dollars in some hosting is a smart move for new bloggers.
Most web hosting providers that I have used have something like a “one click install” which takes all the pain out of setting up a blog – the reason why you would go to one of the free providers in the first place.
The advantage of doing it yourself and investing the little cash up front is that you are now in control of your online brand.

I think you can have moderate success with free hosting – I use wordpress. But then I wouldn’t consider myself serious blogger. To be very successful I agree you need alternative hosting.

Nice Blog, very well written article but i think we have come a long way in web hosting where if you are just looking for web hosting for your blog, most web hosting providers will be suitable for your site.

well i think host gator is really awesome web hosting company but blue host is another fantastic one.

Remember if the hosting does not work out leave them, get another host. Your business can be at risk if your using a poor host so get another.
Its also nice after all your research if you can also review the host you belong to so that you can give something back and help others also find reliability.
