I finally added a favicon to my blog yesterday. It only took me 5 months to get around to it. I was making my rounds today and already visited a couple of hundred blogs. I made an interesting observation, only about 25% of the blogs had a favicon installed. I am wondering if they are also lazy and have not got around to it yet, or perhaps they do not realize how easy it is to do. I thought it would make sense to outline the simple steps to add a favicon to your blog just in case that is holding some of you back.
I am sure most of you know what a favicon is, but for thise that do not, it is the image that is displayed next to the url in the browser. This image is also shown next to your site in the bookmark section and if you open your browser to look at the most recenbt sites that you have visited.
To create a favicon all you have to do is:
- obtain the image you want to use and shrink it down to 16×16 pixels. You can automatically do this by using favicon.cc
- Save the image as favicon.ico
- Use your favorite ftp client and upload the file to the root directory.
That is all you have to do, it couldn’t be easier.
Of course, you do not need a favicon for your blog, but I feel that it does help set you apart and adds a professional, finished look to your blog.
Are you rockin’ a favicon on your blog? If not, why not?

I recommend a trip over to http://www.faviconblog.com
This site has a lot of information to help users understand the favicon, and how to get on on their site. Pretty cool.

keep sharing my friend….. nice blog
nice post.. and i will try it
All the sites I make now I use Favicons for. I never used to bother, but now always use them. They make a site standout in the Bookmarks and when people see your image again, they are more likely to return to your site.
They may be small, but IMo I think their worth it.
I like your favicon, looks really good. I have had mine for sometime now and it’s nothing special, I’m thinking of changing it.

Wish this had come a bit earlier — I had a lot of trouble getting my favicon to work earlier. Nonetheless, good post — this should help many others!

I always get annoyed when someone forgets to put the Favicons on one of our sites before we release it.
I never checked out the favicon tool before, very nice.

Adding a static favicon is a cool thing, but I prefer animated. If you would like to display it just upload one and insert this html tag
Lol, Brian’s right. I’m a die-hard advocate for favicons. I follow hundreds of sites, and am on even more on any given day, so having a visual picture to relate to a site is key for me. Having a branded favicon is such a simple way to make that connection.

yeah, favicons are important as they set you apart from the rest of the crowd…

I remember that when I was first starting out I had no idea how to do this. Then I found a favicon gallery that was showcasing them from other sites and I thought that they were free to use. Some guy contacted me and let me know that that was taboo. Ooops. I went ahead and created my own and put that behind me. Live and learn, I guess.

I’ve had a favicon on my blog for a while, I think it always looks that bit more professional to have your own favicon and it personalises your site to.

Still there are many bloggers (specially newbie, like me) who doesn’t know how favicon can effect site the site’s professional look.
You’re lucky Quirky Jessi doesn’t come by and tell you how important a favicon is. She uses them as a guide to what website is on what tab. IT’s actually a great I idea I have started doing it as well.
Good to see you finally got one! I just updated mine when I launched me new theme. Always make it match your website. It’s part of building your brand too.

Nice favicon! Yes… people don’t have to have them, but they do help set you apart
I am not sure either if people are lazy or just don’t know how. Maybe they don’t now how to create an image themselves? I sure that is the case for some.
