Choosing a Blog Provider

This is a guest post by Dragon Blogger

Many readers have come to me to ask if they should use blogger.com, today.com or other online blog hosting sites and I tell all my friends and fellow bloggers the same thing.  Decide what you want to accomplish with your blog and you will know the best way to proceed.

If you are looking to make some ad revenue or perhaps even get a few paid assignments for your blog, then it is worth spending the money and investing in a self hosted wordpress blog.  This is because many advertisers do not want to pay to advertise on free domain hosted blogs, and some sites such as Today.com prohibit using advertising networks or hosting advertising ads on your blog posts.

If you just want to share information, photos for the world as a hobby with no serious intention to monetize or market your blog, then you are perfectly fine using Blogger, Xanga or any other blog.  Today.com even offers some payment for blog posts, but considers all blog posts their property, so you cannot repost material elsewhere or even take your posts with you should you want to convert to a wordpress blog later.

When you won your own wordpress blog you have complete control over content, advertising and can choose which programs and advertisers you wish to work with and when.  When you leave your blog hosted to some other site, you always give up your complete creative control and are restricted to whatever the terms are from the site hosting your blog, or you might not stand out for advertisers since hosted sites carry more weight since bloggers paying for the own domains are likely to be more serious about keeping the site running and content updated regularly.

I don’t really want to earn money with blogging… for now at least. So now I’m staying with blogger.com…

I personally like wordpress, i just like all the plugins and ease of use that they have built into their product, and it is still pretty powerful.

After reading the comments here I have to say that it is very refreshing to find a blog about a niche where the topics stay on point about the industry. I’m not everything, but the majority is on point and beneficial. Keep it going.

i think even if you’re staying out of adsense and other ways to monetize a blog, i think you should still pay the few dollars and get your own domain, it really makes a difference in the long run and you won’t have to xfer everything later.

Ya, I wish I would have spent time reading before I set up my blogs on blogger. I don’t know though I can’t complain, I am doing well with the traffic though this is not because of well advertised blogs rather than a well advertised website that I list my blogs and about 25% of the visitors that come to my site end up on my blogs, but you are right when it comes to picking a blog go with word press if your serious about becoming a blogger. Monetizing a blogger blog with adsense is quite easy though. Anyway good post.

Thanks for the post and I think your suggestion is quite true. According to the need one should choose the blog provider. But over all blogger and the word press is the best options to start a own blog, and you suggest a blog the name is today.com.Still I dint work but it sounds good hopefully

thanks for the post. Blogger and the word press is the free and user friendly blog provider now a days. But many other blog provider like today.com maintained by you are also the appropriate for the the blog promotions.

@gyle@payday loans no faxing, To each their own, but I would never blog on today.com. Why create content and trafic for someone else?

Another good reason to get a blog provider is that they are becoming ever more affordable, if you are serious about having your own blog and want a truly stable experience and robust solution, paid hosting is the only sensible alternative.

I originally started with Shared Hosting on one provider, switched to Virtual Private Hosting (VPS) then to another Shared Hosting provider entirely due to poor performance.
