Basic Blogging Tips that I taught my kids

As some of you know, my ten year old son and six year old daughter have their own blogs called Blogging Boy and Blogging Girl.  They have been blogging for several months now and my son has been asking a lot of questions about how he can make money with his blog.  I told him to slow down a bit and make sure that he has the basics down first so he can build a strong foundation.  He responded by asking what the basics are.  Here are some of the basic tips that I have passed along to him.

  • Establish and stick to a regular blogging schedule
  • Write blog posts that either educate, entertain or inspire your readers
  • Make sure your blog theme is clean and simple and easy to navigate
  • Try to carve out a niche and stick to a handful of topics instead of being all over the place
  • Promoting your blog is equally important as writing blog posts
  • Comment on other blogs
  • Have fun
  • Personalize your “about” page
  • Must have plugins like All in One Seo and WP-Spam free
  • Create custom permalinks when you first start your blog

These are the top 10 basic blogging tips that I passed along.  I would love to hear your comments…What do you think is the most important basic blogging tip??

Internet is growing day by day & now it’s an important part of our daily routine. I really admire your kids for taking part in blogging. I hope they are learning well. Tips you told them are really important for a starter. I remember there was no one to guide me. Your children would be proud to have your support on their side.

    Hi Dan,
Nice tips for beginners. I think “have fun” is the most important in blogging. If you can’t have fun while blogging, then one day you will stop blogging. I think blogging is also a hobby to live up.

i agree with point number #2. that is the most important point i think. nice thought.

You’ve hit the nail on the head here. It is very informative. Having a website and waiting for it to naturally climb in the search engines can encourage people to lean towards blackhat tactics… my answer would be to steer clear of any practices that can damage your website and online reputation.

Hi Dan. Yeah, I would agree that you have the very basic in blogging tips up there. Of course, there’s more advice to be had, but that’s a good foundation to go by. I have found that when I stray from most of those tips that my blogging experience becomes less fulfilling. Personally, I think that having fun and promoting your blog are the two best tips. Blogging is more about the community and the fellowship than it is about being on your soapbox and getting attention. I truly feel sorry for the bloggers who haven’t figured that out yet.

It is great to hear that there are still smart kids out there who can drag themselves away from the video games, texting, etc and do something productive. You guys are creating a new generation of English majors and journalists!

Here is my tip for new bloggers: Read! Everything you can get your hands on, books, magazines, other blogs, etc, anything that follows the niche/theme of what you plan to blog about. By doing this you will soon develop a sense of writing styles that appeal to you. Then, if you are like most writers, before you hit that publish button, you will read back and edit your posts. When you do, you will remember those things that kept you reading the work of others and it will come out in your writing.

I knew you wouldn’t miss the most important tip, “Comment on other Blogs”. You have to build that network, and for me right now I have a little over 400 posts in my reader to go through.

That can very well mean 300 comments on blogs somewhere through the course of today.

Dan. You must really be proud of both Blogging Boy and Girl. I went over to see their blogs and it fits nicely with their age. Clean, well designed and good content I must say. The one thing I found in common on both blogs are the “holodays” and “holadays”:) and all are special thanks to you.

Dude. Kudos for taking the time to lead your children to the online world. I also have two kids of my own, and for some reason they are not very interested in blogging (yet). Maybe one day.

This is fantastic, I didn’t know you have kids :) . My son though he turns six next week is not proficient enough in writing or language to start a blog (unless he dictated and I wrote) but he asked me when he will have his own website soon.

One opinion I have here, I would never let my kids create a personal blog and share photo’s or information about themselves while they are under 18. There is just too much danger on the internet for such activity. But I would let him create a blog about Spiderman, or games, or comics as long as he didn’t share personal information.

Both your kids blogs are well written, and I think blogging is a great way for them to learn reading, writing and skills online that will help them in the future, plus maybe build some college savings early with AdSense revenue being transfered to a 529 savings account as it accrues?

Congrats to you and your boys.

In my opinion a good blogging tip is that make sure that you prefer quality over quantity. Because quality posts get good response from the readers. They might share it to their friends.

I agree with you that commenting is important and it has become an important source of traffic to my blog
