Blog Post Length

If you have been reading my blog for the last couple of weeks you may have noticed that I tend to keep my blog posts right around 257 words per post.  This is somewhat intentional as I have been told by the best seo pro that blog posts between 250 and 300 words are the best for Google’s sake.  The great length debate dates back to the early days of blogging and there are still no real answers about what is best.  There are a lot of opinions on the subject, and ultimately you will have to find the right balance that works for you and your readers.  Here are a couple of things to keep in mind:

·         Attention span- Keep in mind that readers bounce around from site to site and blog to blog.  I just looked at my analytics and it shows that the average reader spends 1:39 minutes on this blog.  This is enough time to read two blog posts at a normal pace and then maybe click an ad (wishful thinking!)  In my opinion posts that are over 500 words should be few and far between.  My personal preference when I read other blogs is around 300 words.

·         Quantity of posts- Is it better to write one 500 word post or two 250 word posts.  This is area with many opinions but no solid answers.  I will tell you that I have a green jobs blog that is doing very well in readership and Google rankings and I write at least 2 and sometimes 3 blog posts of 200-250 words each.

As I am writing this, I am thinking that I should adjust my strategy and try to add an additional post per day even if it is less than 250 words.  The real answer is probably to not worry about the numbers and just write the post until you have adequately covered the topic.  That just sounds too easy though….

I wrote a similar post like this. I don’t listen to what people recommend, and I simply go with what I believe is right. I like short posts just like you.
