Was the pr update a trick or treat for you?

First of, Happy Halloween to everyone!

Yesterday many of us bloggers took notice of the google page rank update.  It seems like it took forever for this newest update and this will probably be the last one for the year.

I am still at pr 3 and I am a little upset about it to be honest.  I am wondering what I have to do to get pr 4 or higher.  I have done all of the basic, I update my blog at least 5 times a week.  I comment on at least 50 “do follow” blogs every week.  I submit articles to ezine and other article sites.  I submit to blog directories.  What the hell do I have to do to get pr 4, do I have to buy links from high pr sites?

Although I am ranting and am truly upset about this, I am happy that my career related blog received pr 3 from pr 2.  The thing that is crazy about that is I do not update regulary.  I do not comment at all on other blogs using that domain.  I have not submitted to many directories at all.  I have not written any new articles in this latest update period.

In short, I have been busting my ass trying to increase pr on this blog and I have done nothing to increase pr on my other blog and they both have the same PR.

What’s up with that?

Anyway, I hope you got a treat from the big G this time around.  Let me know your stories regarding your pr change.

how to select blog hosting

A couple of days ago I wrote a post about how serious bloggers should buy their own domain and I provided some tips on how to choose your web hosting . If you are going to spend a considerable amount of time and energy building your blog, wouldn’t you want to own it?  I know I want control of my blog, not Google.   After reading the comments it seems like most people agree with me on that point.

There are hundreds of website hosting companies to choose from and it is important to do your research before choosing one.  Of course one consideration will be price and I have seen hosting as cheap as $1.99 a month all the way up to $19.99 a month.  In my opinion you should never select a hosting company on price alone. There are many other factors to consider, such as up time and customer service.  A word of advice, NEVER do business with a hosting company that does not list a phone number on their website.  I got burnt by this early on and it is a lesson I will never forget.  It is important to read reviews and ask other bloggers and webmasters what they would recommend.  Through the comments on my blog and based on my own knowledge and experience some top choices for bloggers are Blue Host and Host Gator.  They seem to be reasonably priced and have good up time and good customer service.

My recommendation is FATCOW.  They are great in customer service and they have the best deal going right now.  Here is a link if you want to start your research..

Sponsored Tweets or Ad.ly – what is better for making money on Twitter?

What is the best way to make money on Twitter ?

Well, I am not really sure.  Yet…

Earlier today I signed up for the two newest make money with Twitter sites:

Ad.ly and Sponsored Tweets

Ad.ly is a new service that places in stream ads in your Twitter posts.  They match publishers with advertisers and will send one ad tweet every other day.  As a publisher you get to approve the ad campaign before it goes live and you can also set your own price.  When I signed up, they suggested a price of $36 a campaign per week.  The next step is to sit back and relax and wait for publishers to contact me.

Sponsored Tweets is very similiar to ad.ly but the major difference is that you get payed per tweet not by campaign.  They also suggest a price to charge per Tweet, they suggested that I charge $3.69 per tweet.  I would love to see that happen!!  They also encouraged me to “sit back and wait for the offers to roll by.”

So that is exactly what I will do, I will see what happens with these two services.

I will write a follow up post in exactly 30 days and let you know if I made any money and if I did, which service I made more with.

Is anyone using these services yet?

How to choose web hosting for your blog

In my opinion (please leave a comment if you disagree) if you want to become a serious blogger and be taken serious as a blogger you need to have your own hosting.  I think you would be hard pressed to name over 3 well known bloggers that are using a blogspot free hosted platform.

When people ask me about tips for starting a blog, I always tell them to invest $8 in a memorable and brandable domain name (a .com is still best) and make the investment to buy web hosting .  I truly believe that these are truly investments and if you are committed to blogging you should be able to make your investment back in a couple of months.  I am not going to go into a diatribe about the benefits of hosting your own blog.  Instead, I want take some time to discuss the various types of hosting options and how you can find the best deals.

Shared Hosting-

This is by far the most common type of hosting and the majority of blogs are on shared hosting.  All of my blogs are on shared hosting.  As the name suggests, on this platform you are sharing bandwidth and resources with other users.  This allows the price to be very reasonable with this option.

Dedicated Hosting -

If you choose this option you will have your own dedicated server and will not have to share with anyone.  This will allow you to customize your server for your specific needs.  Obviously, this option will cost you more than shared hosting.

VPS Hosting -

This is a newer hosting option that is gaining popularity.  VPS stands for virtual private servers and it works by separating areas within a single server to create multiple virtual servers within it.  In terms of cost, the price is right in the middle.

How do you find the best deals on hosting?

In my opinion it is smart to ask other bloggers what they use and recommend.  I also recommend you visit some websites that feature a variety of options and compares features, benefits and price.  If you would like my recommendation…I an VERY happy with Fatcow.  Great customer service and the best price you can find for the quality.  Plus, they offer one click, super easy wordpress installation.
