Basic Blogging Tips that I taught my kids

As some of you know, my ten year old son and six year old daughter have their own blogs called Blogging Boy and Blogging Girl.  They have been blogging for several months now and my son has been asking a lot of questions about how he can make money with his blog.  I told him to slow down a bit and make sure that he has the basics down first so he can build a strong foundation.  He responded by asking what the basics are.  Here are some of the basic tips that I have passed along to him.

  • Establish and stick to a regular blogging schedule
  • Write blog posts that either educate, entertain or inspire your readers
  • Make sure your blog theme is clean and simple and easy to navigate
  • Try to carve out a niche and stick to a handful of topics instead of being all over the place
  • Promoting your blog is equally important as writing blog posts
  • Comment on other blogs
  • Have fun
  • Personalize your “about” page
  • Must have plugins like All in One Seo and WP-Spam free
  • Create custom permalinks when you first start your blog

These are the top 10 basic blogging tips that I passed along.  I would love to hear your comments…What do you think is the most important basic blogging tip??

Improve Alexa Ranking – with a little help from your friends

Every blogger I know wants to improve Alexa ranking, even the bloggers that say it doesn’t matter want to get a lower ranking.  Last month I wrote a post titled How to improve your Alexa Ranking and I highlighted 5 easy things you can do right now that will make a major impact on your Alexa rating.  I was reading one of my favorite blogs over the weekend and noticed that Extreme John wrote a great post about Alexa ranking as well.  In fact, he mentioned a great tip that I never even considered.  Next time you are on Alexa.com and look up your site you will notice that you can actually leave a comment and add a rating.  Apparently, if you receive a lot of comments and 5 star ratings this will help increase your Alexa rankings.

Here is where we can work together and help each other.  I am sure you all know the concept of “scratch my back” and I came up with a simple idea of exchanging comments and ratings.  So go ahead and search tycoonblogger.com on Alexa and leave me a 5 star rating and a comment.  If you do that just let me know by commenting under this post and I will return the favor.

If you are really in a helpful mood, you may also want to install the Alexa toolbar and visit me often ;-)

Thanks for the idea, John!

Magazine Theme from Elegant Themes

Several Months ago I wrote a post called Best Value in Premium WordPress themes where I highlighted the amazing value offered by the Elegant Themes theme club.  In fact, I am using one of their themes on this blog and several other blogs that I own.  For $20 a year it is by far the best value I have found in my 3+ years of blogging.

I wanted the showcase their latest theme, which is called eNews.  It is a crisp and clean theme that will keep your blog looking organized and professional.  In my opinion, there is nothing worse that a “junky” blog.  Take a look at all the features of this awesome theme:

  • pera compatible
  • Netscape compatible
  • Safari compatible
  • WordPress 2.8 compatible
  • Five Color Schemes
  • Threaded Comments
  • Optional Blog-style Layout
  • Gravatar ready
  • Firefox compatible
  • IE8 + IE7 + IE6 compatible
  • Advertisement Ready
  • Widget ready sidebars
  • Theme Option Pages
  • Custom thumbnail images
  • PSD files
  • Valid XHTML + CSS
  • Smooth tabless design

This theme has more features and looks a lot cooler than every other magazine theme I have seen at any price.   What do you guys think of theme?

Free Keyword Rankings Tool – a must for bloggers and webmasters

As I wrote last month, I am addicted to blogging stats and I am sure many of my fellow bloggers and webmasters are as well.  That is why I am so excited about this new free keyword rankings tool that I found today/  The site is called RockinSEO.com and it is free and simple to use.  All you do is sign up and add your top 20 keywords.  Then a report is automatically generated and it shows you how well you are doing in ranking for your top keywords.  You can rate yourself against your top 3 competitors and you can also check out your stats across Google, Yahoo, and MSN.  As you can see from my graph below, I have my work cut out for me on my top keywords.  Well, time for me to do some link building.

How did you guys make out on your keywords?

What tools do you use to check out your keywords ranking?

another way to add video on Twitter

Last month I wrote a post about how to add video on Twitter.  Earlier this week I came across an even cooler way to add some video and personality to your Twitter stream.

Have you seen Bubble Tweet yet?

The concept is very simple and it is even easier to use.  Bubble Tweet is  a free service where you can create and/or upload a video to their site. A link is created and you can then tweet the link to your followers.  When you open the link a bubble pops up (have you ever seen pop up video on VH1) and your video starts running.

That is all there is to it.  A very simple idea that I think can add a tremendous amount of value to your Twitter brand.  We all knoe that Twitter is being taking over by robots and spam bots.  By utilizing video you are able to personalize your account and really begin to build and strengthen relationships with your followers.

Another cool benefit is that your video will be displayed on their homepage and others just may “stumble upon” your video, like what they say and then start following you.

If you want to check it out in real time, take a look at my latest tweet and click on the link -;

What do you think?  Here to stay? or just another fad?
