Entrecard seems to be listening

One of the major frustrations that bloggers have had with Entrecard is the poor management and lack of customer support for bloggers.  It has been a little over a week since the new ownership has taken over and I am personally impressed with the changes and direction they are moving in.  In case you are not a member or if you are and have not been paying attention, here are the two major changes that have taken place so far.

  • They got rid of the paid advertising.  This was the biggest frustration and drove hundreds of bloggers from the service.  The bottom line is that it was truly unfair to the bloggers and the new management obviously recognized that and made a move to put an end to it.
  • Fix the Marketplace- In my post last week when I wrote about the sale of Entrecard, I mentioned that improving the marketplace should be a top priority.  Cindy Ung, who is the “face” of the new EC Management, must have read my blog post because that is exactly what is happening.  They are moving towards using the forum as the marketplace to exchange credits for services.  This makes a lot of sense as you can easier find what you are looking for and advertise your services.  It is so much easier that you have to wonder what Graham was thinking smoking when he designed the original marketplace.  They also implemented the iTrader system which is common on many other webmaster blogs like Digital Point and V7N.  If you are not familiar, with iTrader, it is a point system where you can rate the buyer or seller after the transaction.  Obviously, the more points, the more trust you can have doing a transaction with that party.  I can say that I used the system and it is working well, I already made 6,000 credits today and I have received a lot of hits on my blog contest site by advertising it in the contest section.  As part of the improvements in the marketplace, thay also increased the amount of credits you can transfer from 1,000 to 25,000.  I am very happy about that because that is the exact amount I will be transfering the the first place winner on my Entrecard Contest.  Great segue, huh…If you are interested in entering the contest- click this link - Daily Blog Contest

7 ways to reward your blog commentators

Most bloggers strive to make their blog a community where people can learn, interact and exchange ideas.  This is often achieved through the comment section.  It has been said that comments are the lifeblood of a blog and I definitely agree with that statement.  Many blogger, both new and experienced, have a difficult time attracting comments to their blog.  A while back I wrote a post on how to get more blog comments.  In this post, I want to get a little more specific and talk about rewarding your commentators to encourage them to start and continue adding value through quality comments.

Conventional wisdom tells us that people are more inclined to take action if there is something in it for them.  As an example, I think back about when I first started college and there were dozens of credit card companies that were trying to get new students to sign up.  What did they do, they gave something away, usually a tee shirt or something along those lines.  The tee shirts probably cost them a buck but by offering the small reward more people were inclined to sign up.  The same is true with blog comments, if you are willing to give a little and reward those that take time to comment, you will be ensuring that people will take the time to actually do it.

I came up with a list of 7 ways you can reward your commentators:

1.Make your links “do follow”, this is self explanatory, as you are rewarding your commentators by providing them a quality backlink to their site.  To ruly reward them, I recommend installing the commentluv and keyword luv plugin.

2.Install Top Commentators plugin- This is similiar to the above reward where you will be providing a backlink and increased visibility to the people who comment most.

3.Create a post once a month that links back to your top commentators.  I started doing this several months ago and it is a great way to reward your commentators with a link and hopefully drive a bit of traffic too.

4.Become active on their blog.  When ever someone comments on my blog, I visit there blog and I usually return the favor and will comment on theirs.  If the content is good, I will subscribe and become a regular reader and commentator.  Basically, you can reward them by being a regular contributor on their blog.

5.Follow and Retweet.  As a reward you can follow and engage with your commentators on Twitter.  If a tweet catches your attention, go ahead and retweet it.

6.Give some social networking love. Another way to reward your commentators is to seek them out on social networks and link up with them and promote their posts.

7.Another reward is to reserve some ad space for your top commentators.  I am actually going to implement this next month.  I will be rewarding the top commentator for August with a free month of advertising on the sidebar of my blog.

As you can see, these are small rewards but every blogger would love to get as many links and promotion as possible.  I know I do!

The last way to reward your commentators is by simply saying Thank you.  So, Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! for all the excellent comments and helping build a community here with this blog in such a short time frame.

Monetize Your Blogroll – Do you?

I was recently thinking about the importance of a blogroll.  When I first started blogging 2 years ago, bloggrolls were a big deal.  It seems that some bloggers are not really utilizing their blogroll.  I am about 6 months into this blog and I have really neglected my blogroll section.  I have a total of 4 sites listed in my blogroll and they are all mine, 2 are other blogs that I own and 2 are blog directories that I own.  It is about time that I focus on this part of my blog.  Some  bloggers link to other bloggers that they respect, and others use the blogroll to exchange links with other bloggers.  Both of these are great uses for the blogroll section, but I am interested in monetizing this section of my blog.  Here are 3 ways that I am going about monetizing my blogroll.

  1. There are several sites out there that act as the middleman for bloggers that want to sell their blogroll space and link buyers.  There are two major players in this space right now ; Blogroll Please and BlogRolled.  These sites claim to pay up to $30 per link to the blogger.  I signed up for both services today, and I will follow up amd let you know how things are going.
  2. Webmaster forums are a great place to buy and sell links. In the past, I have had a lot of success with the Digital Point forums.  They have an entire section that is dedicated to the buying and selling of links.  It is very simple, all you have to do is start a thread and mention the pr of your blog, the niche, and the amount you are charging per month.  Sit back and wait for your inbox to fill up with interested buyers.  I have not sold links on DP for this blog, but I have for other blogs that I own as well as some static sites that I own as well.  Talk about quick and easy money!
  3. Direct advertising- As part of my advertising options, I am including text links as an option.  I am hoping to deal direct and cut out the middleman if at all possible.  If you are interested in advertising rates, contact me through the contact form and I will email you my rates.

I am hoping this is will contribute nicely to my bottom line.  I am curious to see how you guys are using your blogroll?

Let me know if you are just linking to bloggers you like, doing a link exchange or if you are also making money with your blogroll.

Promote your blog to new readers

I am thrilled with the daily readers I have here on Tycoon Blogger.  The regular readers are the lifeblood on any thriving blog community.  I have been thinking of how I can crack the 300 visitors per day mark that seems to be the pattern of my blog lately.  The conclusion that I came to is that I need to promote my blog to new readers.  I have devised a plan that will target 3 areas that I hope will result in increased readers to my blog.  I will be tracking this throughout August and will provide the results at the end of the month.

Here are the three areas that I will be focused on.

  1. Social Media- I wrote a post last week about why I stopped using Digg to promote my blog.  For the upcoming month I will be promoting my blog via Mixx, Blog Engage, and Twittley.
  2. Guest Posting- I will be looking to do at least one guest post per week on blogs that are outside of the normal circles that I congregate in.  Here is a blog post about the benefits of guest blogging.
  3. Advertising- This is the area that I will be most aggressively pursuing this coming month.  I have been happy with Adgitize and can expect about 60 visitors per day.  I have never really advertised heavily on Entrecard, but I am going to heavily market via Entrecard in August.  Expect to see my badge everywhere (kind of like the Ad Master)  I am also looking for other blogs that I can advertise on.  I have sold several ad slots this month and I am going to take that money and invest it back into my blog.  I am also looking into other advertising venues, possibly Facebook.

“Blogger Spotlight” – Karen from Blazing Minds

It is Saturday and time for another installment of “Blogger Spotlight.”  This is a weekly series where I interview a famous or up and coming blogger and ask some questions to learn more about them and their blog.  This week I interviewed Karen from Blazing Minds.  If you have not been to her blog, I highly recommend it, it is full of blogging advice as well as personal posts and other entertaining topics.

Here is the interview:

Q. Please tell us who you are, where you are from and a little bit about your blog.
A. My name is Karen I’m from North Wales in the UK and my blog is a mixed bag of posts, it’s my escape to post about anything I want ;)

Q. How long have you been blogging?
A. I’ve been blogging on my Blazing Minds blog since 2008 and love every minute of it..

Q. What got you interested in blogging?
A. I think it was just the fact that everyone seemed to be doing it at the time and I thought it would be a chance to get my thoughts out into the world, I never realised how it could be so addictive though.

Q. What are your top three sources of traffic to your blog?
A. EntreCard has been a top slot for incoming traffic for a while now, but lately it has been caught up by links on other blogs and wonder of Twitter.

Q. What is your best money maker for your blog?
A. It used to be Google Asense, but lately that has taken a big decline, which I think can be attributed to the use of “ad blockers” that browsers seem to be using a lot of these days, though it does still bring in a nice sum, but CPC links with SocialSpark and sponsored posts seem to bring in a bit more these days.

Q. What else do you online besides blogging?
A. I have been producing music under the name Remergence since the late 90′s and that is one of my passions, so when I’m not blogging, I’m usually working on material for the next “smash hit” album ;) I’m also a bit of a Twitter addict so I love to post there as well, ok, I just love the internet LOL

Q. What social network are you most involved with? How can we connect with you there?
A. I spend a lot of time with Twitter these days, I made some great friends on there since joining sometime back and utilise it with my blog, for anyone wanting to find me on Twitter my Twitter is @RemBeatZ..
